Why couldn't we have done this with Bush
Imagine, hundreds of thousands of Americans swarming DC and cities all over the country, bringing the economy to a grinding halt, demanding the resignation of Bush/Cheney. If other countries can do it, why can't we? I know, just wishful thinking. As long as we have American Idol, the Kardashians, Jersey Shore, and football to entertain us, we're content to let our country fall apart around us.

1. Generally, in democratic countries, we just vote.

18. Yeah, and in real democratic countries they allow the votes to be counted.
In 2000, the US Supreme W. Court stopped the vote counting and appointed the chimp.

That's when we should have taken to the streets. When we didn't, the fascists won.

22. EGG-ZACKLY! - That was the time to take to the streets - an illegally installed "president"
and things have gone steadily downhill ever since. We have only the illusion of democracy.

2. Because, deep down, Americans know they'll be killed for trying.
If anything like what's going on in Egypt were attempted here, it would end in slaughter. Just look at how they treated us during "normal" protests during his maladministration.

The Bush administration: bandits in this tame hour.

4. True. I often wondered if they were even evil enough
to attack protesters they couldn't control and then blame it on terrorists. I wouldn't have put anything past them.

5. no...
nation's much too divided. At best 4/10 Americans would have been against such a movement, probably more. Just as easy to say "Why don't the TeaBaggers march on DC to oust Obama?"

Not gong to happen, wouldn't happen.

9. 500,000 in DC to protest *'s surge. Not a word in the MSM. One hour on CSPAN.
There were others as well. When the press is silent the people do not know what is happening around them. Go figure.

10. Because apathy and ignorance are so prevalent, and we're lucky if most Americans
even vote yet alone know the issues. We've had it too good as a country, I think there's been generational disinterest in paying attention anymore - instead, many are directed by sound bites, disinformation and propaganda. I think many Americans get too bored or too frustrated when they start to pay attention. ... so it's out of sight, out of mind.

16. Because it took 30 years of Mubarak...
...who was (despite the common DU desperate need for hyperbole and histrionics) far more corrupt and repressive than Bush, because it took living in much more desperate economic conditions than we currently face in the US, for the Egyptians to get to the point they are at now.

"American Idol, the Kardashians, Jersey Shore, and football to entertain us" wouldn't cut it for distracting Americans if what Americans needed to be distracted from was yearly incomes equivalent to about $1,800 US, routine torture by the police (much more frequent, severe, and closer to home than anything Bush did), and sham elections (yes, much worse than any sense of futility you might feel about voting in the US, for those with no sense of perspective), and heavy media censorship.

20. Follow the money.
The large anti-war demonstrations were, for the most part, scheduled for weekends. Minimal disruption of business and profits with plenty of time allotted for employees attending the protests to return to work by Monday. Everyone is happy except for a few questioning souls who wonder aloud why the protests had little if any effect. They never were meant to have any effect other then to channel the anti-war movement into a rather harmless activity.
