Snow, wind whip a shut-down city

By JOE ROBERTSON and ROBERT A. CRONKLETON

The Kansas City Star

Terrifying winds thrashed the Kansas City area today with its worst winter blast in decades, forcing the closure of Interstate 70 from I-470 to St. Louis.

It was unclear whether the storm would meet the official marks of a blizzard, but chilling gusts of more than 30 mph and snowfall approaching 10 inches will be menacing the city into the night.

“For practical purposes, it’s a blizzard,” National Weather Services meteorologist Ryan Cutter said. “It’s miserable out there.”

The storm had forced closure of much of Interstate 70 because of “whiteout” conditions and Kansas City International Airport.

I-70 closed across most of Missouri

Airport is closed for first time in decades

1. Wind chill in Springs is now -37 degrees...
Temperatures have dropped steadily for the last 48 hours. Supposed to warm up in the 40's by Thursday. The wind is a real killer with these below -0 temperatures.

4. Snow stopped in Denver, but damn... it is subzero and..
going to have a -20 windchill tonight... My beloved doggy girl would not go more than half a block before quickly doing her business and wanting to return with her poor frozen feet... And she's a real snow-lover, normally.

So, now that I have no damned intention of going out... wouldn't you know that I'm having these horrible cravings and nothing but healthy food in the house! LOL

5. The wind is awful. If this were a nice gentle snow it would be fine.
I've already shoveled the driveway three times, plus part of the back yard twice for the dog. It just keeps blowing back.

6. Just saw pictures of huge waves crashing over Lake Shore Drive
in Chicago. It's a total mess here already, and the worst is yet to come. Happily, we are safely ensconced in our apartment on the sixth floor--as high as we care to be in a storm such as this. Just hope the electricity doesn't go out.

Stay warm and safe, everyone. Don't go outside.

11. The Show Is Just Cranking Up Here...
The winds and snow kicked up around 3pm...the last planes have just landed at O'Hare and the fun is just beginning. Predictions here are for upwards of 20 inches of "partly cloudy" by tomorrow afternoon then sub-zero temps with wind-chills at -20. There's been plenty of warning this thing was coming and anyone who is stuck in it deserves what they get. Most are hunkered down...it's gonna be a rough night.

13. Just checked temps & much of the NWT and the Yukon in CA are NOT experiencing sub-zero temps
today and tonight, like what is normal for those arctic/sub-arctic regions this time of year. Must be because they just plumb ran out of it, after pushing their artic chill into the US's central and midwestern regions to mix with that monster low pressure system that has, is, and will continue clobbering the US through tomorrow night.

Thanks Canada!!
