I think this was the deal Mubarak worked out with Obama..?
He would give it one last shot. If the people accepted his offer and the crowds dispersed, then he would help pick his successors. If they balked, which they did, then he would resign within the next week or two? He is working behind the scenes with the Americans and his military advisers, in my opinion. He will be gone soon.

1. Could well be. He could acquiesce for "the good of Egypt", save face and let el Baradei step in.

2. That's just a guess...
But it's as good as any other.

I too believe he will be gone soon, one way or the other.

poke holes in your theory.

8. I can't believe Obama is that stupid. It is very clear which way the Egyptian
people want to go with this, and their plans do not include Mr. Mubarak.

10. I would take off my shoes too
is Mubarak inflaming the people to resort to violence so he then can order the army or police to take aggressive action on the people???? the people have clearly (without violence) have spoken.

11. Why are you besmearing Obama with this "deal" assumption?
First, Obama is not the ruler of Egypt ....
Second, since when has an American president been able to influence the Middle East without shock and awe? Carter maybe.

20. The main thing the Egyptians want is for Mubarak to leave
so anything is better than Mubarak staying.
Just my opinion.

15. There will be business as usual in the very near future. Mubarak will end up
in the US. There will be a closed door meeting in the WH, followed by a photo op on the lawn.

Shortly thereafter Mubarak will be delivered a billion dollars and a new Gulfstream, with an apology for making him come all the way to the US.

After that, business as usual. Foreign aid will continue, much of it will end up in the coffers of the rulers, the hungry will remain hungry, and there will be posturing aplenty by politicians on all sides.

21. I remain optimistic-in spite of a lifetime of experience.
The interesting thing to me about The Hoser's speech is portraying himself as a victim and "suffering". This played about as well as another member of the ruling class who offered"let them eat cake. Ain't going to fly to someone making 50 bucks a month and seeing the price of grain going up. I have no doubt that this is a well organized coup that has mobilized the masses and has been misunderstood or not reported by the media. Words will no longer work. Promises will not be believed.
The real question is who gains the upper hand next. My guess is that a coalition will develop between the Islamic Identity groups and the leaders of the left centered on the basic issues of food and shelter. Hopefully the people of Egypt will be better served by a new government.

22. To clarify, I am not besmirching the President by suggesting a deal...
Of course, he would never make a "deal". And the US has no interest whatsoever in how this turns out. Just let the cards fall where they may...
