Paul Ryan Received Social Security Survivor Benefits
Another hypocrite. Roadmap for America's Future Paul Ryan (proponent of private accounts, raising the retirement age, means testing) received survivor benefits when his father died.

excerpt:

"One day as a 16 year old, Ryan came upon the lifeless body of his father. Paul Ryan, Sr. had died of a heart attack at age 55, leaving the Janesville Craig High School 10th grader, his three older brothers and sisters and his mother alone. It was Paul who told the family of his father’s death.

With his father’s passing, young Paul collected Social Security benefits until age 18, which he put away for college. To make ends meet, Paul’s mother returned to school to study interior design. His siblings were off at college. Ryan remembers this difficult time bringing him and his mother closer."

5. In all likelihood his father paid more into the system than Ryan received as a survivor.
If his father had put that into an insurance policy instead the family would probably have been better off.

The Ryan family will probably not receive the full benefits of the fathers labors.

7. The only reason some people get the benefits back from an
insurance policy in the amount they paid in is because thousands, perhaps millions, of others don't.

Insurance is a profit-generating business and cannot be compared to a benefit that one would get REGARDLESS of whether their parents paid into it or not. Dad could or could not have paid into it, and multiple kids could still get benefits for nearly 18 years.

I would like to see ANY insurance company match that one.

11. What? Survivors benefits require parents who paid into the system.
"The number of years you need to work for your family to be eligible for Social Security survivors benefits depends on your age when you die. The younger you are, the fewer years you need to work. "

19. Interesting - because I saw checks
from a benefit that came from parents who did not pay. It's been a lot of years, though, so perhaps my recollection is faulty.

But reading the link you posted it does look like someone must pay into it, at least minimally.

Though I still bet you get a better deal, even if limited, from SS than any for-profit company.

8. Ok... I'll bite. How is this hypocrisy?
At sixteen he shouldn't have received a payout on an insurance policy his father purchased... because the government required him to purchase it?

The facts surrounding this claim (a 16 year old discovering his dead father)... makes the charge seem particularly craven.

15. Geez calm down. Survivor Benefits are GOOD. Paul Ryan likes to paint SS recipients
as free loaders and people who live in a hammock of government handouts. I was merely pointing out that he had no problem receiving the same benefits that rails against today.

16. Cheap shots? Paul Ryan does not want to "fix" Social Security. He wants to starve
and bleed a successful program, which he himself used. You do know Ryan is a Republican right?

10. He probably received benefits in college also - I know I did
My father was a disabled vet and when he started collecting SS we were also given a monthly check. It was one sum divided among four kids. I got it all once my sister graduated from college and my brothers graduated from high school. They didn't go on to uni.

17. He actually didn't since they stopped giving benefits to college students in 83.
That's awesome you were able to receive benefits into college. Many people want to revert back to that system.
