56. I don't know. It's hard to understand the authoritarian mind.
They are frightened, cowards and ashamed that the world can now see them for what they are.

The other posibility is that they are planning violence and do not want it recorded.

I hope all Western Governments are on the phone to Mubarak right now, letting him know that if one person is killed he will not be going to some expensive hideaway when he leaves, he will be going to jail.

I am so impressed with them, I know they are helping to block people from getting to the square, but I think if there is a sign of violence by the Mubarak thugs, they will definitely intervene on behalf of the people.

It's strange that Mubarak did not cultivate a better relationship with the army. Most dictators do. But I think he went with the 'mercenary/private army idea, believing he could trust them more. I'm surprised he didn't hire Blackwater. Otoh, he didn't expect this. It was very sudden and gave the people a huge advantage because of that.

66. Lol, who do they think they are kidding?
Why is it that the stupidest people seem to get into positions of power?

Well, their function I read, is to protect the state, not necessarily the president. But for now I suppose he still represents the state.

Many of the soldiers are from poor areas from what I've read and joining the military gives them a chance to earn a living and get ahead a little. But in this situation, many of them probably have relatives and friends who are part of the revolution.

If Mubarak's thugs start attacking the people, I do think their duty would be to protect them.

Yesterday eg, they sent a fire truck away when the people thought it was going to use water hoses on them. So, there are signs they will not allow the people to be attacked. But, they also must worry that if Mubarak survives and they have turned against him they could be executed.

*Ya Hosni Ya Ameel. Bi'et Al gas o bagi al neel" --> "Hosni you traitor, You sold us gas, why don't you sell us the Nile too?" This one is kinda hard for English speakers. Too many guttural letters.
