JOHANNESBURG, South Africa - The United Food and Commercial Workers joined South African unions’ campaign against a planned Wal-Mart takeover of a large South African retailer, Massmart.

Speaking Jan. 17 at Massmart’s shareholders meeting, UFCW Global Strategies Director Michael Bride reminded listeners of Wal-Mart’s vicious anti-union, anti-worker attitudes and its rampant labor law-breaking.

“Wal-Mart’s anti-worker and anti-union bias is well known in North America. From closing a store in Canada after it voted for the union to the dissemination of anti-union propaganda among its U.S. staff, Wal-Mart is widely acknowledged as the most anti-union company in America.
