TPM: Harry Reid Takes Social Security 'Off The Table' (VIDEO)

At an event with progressive activists last week, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid took major Social Security cuts and privatization completely off the legislative table.

"As long as I'm the Majority Leader, I'm going to do everything within my legislative powers to prevent privatizing or eliminating Social Security," Reid said. "I'll simply say it's off the table."

He's got 6 years before he is up again for election and I hope he keeps making statements like these.

8. One statement does not a spine make.
Yes, this is good for Reid to say. Hopefully he will actually act to prove his conviction on this issue. It does not all of a sudden make him a bold Democrat standing up for us on all of the important issues though.

17. It has nothing to do with "SPINE" and never has
It has to do with the fact that the Senate's rules allow him to do this, but don't allow him to push through legislation.

10. We shall see.
Personally I think the PTB 'allowed' Obama to be elected because he would do their bidding. One of their top priorities is slashing the social safety net. I would be shocked if Obama doesn't assist them in their objectives. I mean, come on, his treasury secretary is the Timothy Giethner.

12. We need to make this a big deal as the MSM will report that he's being unreasonable
which they have already done. We need to get behind Sen. Reid. This is huge. No other high profile leadership Democrat has said any cuts are "off the table." Good for you Harry.

13. That doesn't mean a damn thing
I haven't watched the video yet since I'm at work but if what the OP quoted is that he actually said then he hasn't taken anything off the table. Nobody is worried about them eliminating social security. People are worried about them cutting social security. And with weasle words like this it only makes me think that they have already decided that they will cut it.

14. It's not weasely. He was pretty emphatic. Did you see his Meet the Press interview
He said "off the table." He's a lot more clear on this than our President is.

16. WHATS OFF THE TABLE? Eliminating social security? That's not what people are worried about
people are worried about them cutting social security.

I did not see the meet the press interview. If he said cuts to social security are off the table great. But I have a feeling that's not what he said, is it?
