Ga. Lawmaker Proposes Doing Away With Driver's Licenses
ATLANTA -- A state lawmaker from Marietta is sponsoring a bill that seeks to do away with Georgia driver's licenses.

State Rep. Bobby Franklin, R-Marietta, has filed House Bill 7, calling it the "Right to Travel Act."

In his bill, Franklin states, "Free people have a common law and constitutional right to travel on the roads and highways that are provided by their government for that purpose. Licensing of drivers cannot be required of free people, because taking on the restrictions of a license requires the surrender of an inalienable right."

Franklin told CBS Atlanta News that driver's licenses are a throw back to oppressive times. “Agents of the state demanding your papers," he said. "We’re getting that way here.”

3. Does that mean they wouldn't have to have proof of insurance either?
Because I'm pretty sure that the insurance companies -- who actually run this country -- will object to that.

5. A right to travel on government-provided roads?
The ability to hold contradictory thoughts is strong in Mr. Franklin. No doubt he will win the support of millions of drunken drivers who would use the "freedom" afforded them to maim and kill fellow citizens by the carload, truckload and busload.

Is this fellow representative of Marietta, or is his incumbency in the Georgia house an aberration?

18. I live in Marietta....
I'm in exile from the great state of Virginia. There are parts of Cobb County who love what this guy is selling. There is a small number who do not. Sadly, this place is as backward as the rest of this god forsaken state.

15. huh?? it is not a right to drive... it is a privilege. we are free to travel by other means....
bus, bicycle..... driver's licenses assure that a person driving has the training required to drive. well maybe we shouldn't have medical licenses either... just let anyone go out and perform surgeries....

22. Maybe he hit a few of the checkpoints that are checking license and insurance information.
That might be what has him all riled up. Of course getting rid of driver's licenses is a stupid answer to the problem. Just get rid of the roadblocks. All they are is an excuse to search and harass people anyway.

At least we can count on him to vehemently oppose anything like Arizona's SB1070. Well, we could if he were consistent.
