Army wants Dan Choi to pay them. He refuses.
Lt. Dan Choi has issued a public letter to the president in which he says he will not pay a $2500 debt the Army claims he owes as a result of being discharged early under DADT. Embiggen the above image for the complete letter.

7. So do I
It's an outrage when your boss demands you pay him for firing you.

5. I admire his courage, but they'll get their money if they want it
As in, they'll just take it. A lien, or a wage garnishment, withholding a tax refund. The same tools the government uses against student loan defaulters.

8. I am a student loan defaulter
I fought against garnishment and won. I also did it without a lawyer.

Some people in Government do listen.

9. How about some gratitude instead of grandstanding?
DADT is ending under Obama's watch. Now Choi drops snippy little remarks on him in a public way. The request for payment was, while unfortunate, probably just a routine procedure that needs correcting as we work our way through the logistics of ending DADT.

15. How is acting as a leader on this issue grandstanding?
And why do you think Choi's remarks's are "snippy" or "little"?

18. What a sick post. As if Obama shuffling and hemming and hawing to pass a PRO-MILITARY initiative
makes him some Great Savior of the Oppressed. If LGBT organizations and people like Choi hadn't constantly pressed against Obama he would have backed off this no-brainer, bipartisan piece of legislation. This is CRUMBS. And I'm not going to lick Obama's boots to thank him for letting me serve in the military during wartime. For chrissake, it's the VERY LEAST he could do for all the gay people who voted for him. And I do mean VERY LEAST.

16. Choi failed to honor his contract according to the article
And it was routine to collect unearned enlistment bonuses. DADT was policy at the time and he violated it.

It's something that needs to be worked through.

13. I can't quite wrap my head around this.
Dan Choi got a fucking bill from the SAME military branch who fired him for no good reason? If anything, the DOD owes HIM for wrongful termination.

Bizzaro World.
