The last election was a down payment...?
..for the Democrats?

The Party experienced one of the most devastating defeats in the history of House elections. Next year, they will have 23 Senate seats up for election, compared to only 10 for the Republicans. It will be nothing short of a political miracle if they hold on to the Senate. And it will be no easy re-election for Barack Obama either. Why?

Because history called and nobody answered.

It was as if George W Bush never happened. The Party continued many of his same policies, including his destructive taxcuts and wars. They refused to even change the filibuster rules. Maybe because they see themselves needing those same tactics against the future majority Republicans?

They had a chance to correct the course and they failed. Big time.

2. Democrats may as well have been hanged for being true progressives than Republican lite.
If voters want a conservative they can always vote for the real deal. Democrats may as well have had principles and stood by them.

3. Some in the party want to double down by introducing the same ole failed "gun control policies"
Turn it into a real rout like 1996. Last time that happened Democrats lost control of Congress for the next decade.

5. I seem to recall Clinton being re-elected in 1996
I think you meant 1994.

We'll see about the gun control thing. Personally, I doubt it will go anywhere.

7. Clinton was re-elected and I think even w/ gun control push Obama would be re-elected too.
Both are charistmatic and have reasonably high popularity ratings.

The AWB of 1994 caused Democrats to lose control of Congress in 1996. In hindsight even Bill Clinton who pushed for the worthless AWB believes so.

The Democratic party lost control of Congress in 1996 and didn't regain control until 2006.

6. The most important thing Democrats can do is re-elect Barack Obama...
Otherwise, what do they have? Without a Democratic President, we are all at the mercy of the right-wing Republicans. Do you disagree?
