'WTF?' Sarah Palin on the State of the Union
The Former Alaska Governor Said Obama's Speech Was Tough to Sit Through
By JOHN BERMAN and MARY BRUCE

...Pressed on the idea of the "Sputnik Moment," Palin responded, "When (the president) so often repeated the Sputnik Moment that he would aspire Americans to celebrate. He needs to remember that what happened back then with the former communist USSR and their victory in that race to space, yeah, they won, but they also incurred so much debt at the time that it led to the inevitable collapse of the Soviet Union." Her response left room for creative interpretation.

The Space Race, as it came to be known, is generally considered a race that the United States won.

It isn't clear whether Palin is suggesting that the Soviets won the overall race, or just the beginning with Sputnik.

And if the space race contributed to the collapse of the Soviet Union, as Palin says, wouldn't then the "Sputnik Moment" be a good thing. Palin also confirmed reports that her daughter Bristol has been offered a job working on-air for an radio station, but said that she has yet to decide whether she will accept the offer.

"He would aspire Americans to celebrate"?
Okay, what the hell does that mean? But besides that, since Sputnik went up in 1957, and the Soviet Union hung around until 1990 or so, I'd say that was a pretty slow-motion "inevitable collapse." Also, it's rather giggle-worthy for Sarah Palin to say that someone else "needs to remember" something.

Well, I'm sure the bulldog Fox interviewer was all over her with questions, right?

4. It's part of that moronic "Reagan won the cold war" mentality
As if who our president was had anything at all to do with the Soviet's economic failure.

If the asshole neighbor whom I don't like goes bankrupt and gets a divorce, it's probably got nothing to do with how much money I make. Same thing with the Soviets.

Or, for another metaphor: we only won the cold war because the other team's bus broke down and they had to forfeit. It wasn't because Reagan was our coach.

23. didn't read the politicsusa article, but the CBS one had an air of snark
"Palin seems to have a misunderstanding of the analogy."

This article is really about how she got it wrong. Everything in it was a quote from her or the speech or background info on how she misunderstood. I don't think I've seen this from the mainstream media before where she's concerned.

Although they gave her a pass on "the 'Sputnik Moment' that he would aspire Americans to celebrate." How would he aspire us to do that?

18. Yeah, that's it
She thinks that he meant "emulate the Soviet Union in the 50s, and produce a world first, like Sputnik". As you say, she really thinks that he identifies with the Soviets rather than with the USA. And she also thinks that the Soviets' "Sputnik moment" lasted all the way through to the 80s when the country really started to fail. So she thinks the Soviets were still ahead when the Americans were putting people on the Moon.

26. I was going to forgive her, thinking that she obviously just meant to say "arms race."
The context, however, clearly says otherwise.

Or as clearly as anything Palin says can be.
