19. Right..
A "bubble" that always seems to be at least 6 months ahead of the general public when it comes to reflected common knowledge and opinion.

I dont think there are so this is not truth.

38. If you make you're determination by asking "Are you a Socialist", then probably not.
But if you make your determination by asking where they stand on individual issues, then I would venture to guess that it could likely be the truth.

44. I dont think you get even close to being there...
I think that works with the liberal stance on issues, not the socialist stance on issues. There was only one of several polls that even suggested the public was in favor of single payer universal healthcare. And that is probably the most popular proposal of a government takeover of an industry.

9. This really doesn't surprise me. DU,.............
at least in the year that I've been here, has always been a VERY left wing web site. In all the polls about self identification as I recall, about half self identify as socialists, Socialists, communists, Marxists, and even a few Communists. And I actually believe that it's getting MORE left every day just judging by the posts and replies.

That's why I feel so comfortable here. :)

What was Bush's approval rate after 9/11? Approval of the Iraq war in '03? In the 90s, right?

I remember being so ashamed of being part of that 90%. Looking up to the 10% of brilliant critical thinkers that largely populated DU at the time.

At least I could claim I was young and stupid, and I learned from my mistakes. Others forget. And here they are, forgetting again, so soon.

14. Well, no...
but nice try at snark.

It's odd, you know. I've been on this board for 10 years now, and my opinions on things haven't changed a bit. I didn't start hearing snarky comments like this until Obama was elected. So even though I'm still believing in the same things I've always believed in, all of a sudden, I'm now supposed to be an Obama hater.

I got news for you: I voted for Obama. And if I want to be disappointed in him, I have that right. It has to do with the TRUTH, something the political hardcores around here seem to have trouble getting their head around.

30. What is it about that some here do not get???
Those of us who have been here since the beginning -- we fought Bush on privacy and civil rights, we fought him on the wars, we fougt him on human rights violations, we fought him on environmental attacks and corporate bootlicking and a whole host of thinsg we felt to be wrong for our country.

And now all of a sudden we are supposed to STOP because one of ours is in office and he is doing some of the very same things???

That is a real WFT moment.

15. No, it's still a Democratic website, just one operating with an imperfect Democratic president
in office. It's much easier to generate some unity in opposition to a repub administration than to balance the good with the bad in a Democratic one.

Can you imagine what DU would have looked like when Clinton, Carter, Johnson, JFK, FDR, etc were in office? Some are considered as good, even great, presidents but each also had policies that most here would have vociferously disagreed with. Most people post about policies and actions that they don't like.

... if you ask most people if they're a socialist, they'd say eff no, I aint no socialist but if you instead ask them how they think of socialist ideologies or policies (eg progressive taxation), most people would be for those ideas.

Now that the national party has stripped away even that pretense, many of us are looking for the real thing.

26. Indeed, FDR claimed as much himself - "I am that kind of conservative"
The true conservative seeks to protect the system of private property and free enterprise by correcting such injustices and inequalities as arise from it. The most serious threat to our institutions comes from those who refuse to face the need for change. Liberalism becomes the protection for the far-sighted conservative.

Never has a Nation made greater strides in the safeguarding of democracy than we have made during the past three years. Wise and prudent men — intelligent conservatives — have long known that in a changing world worthy institutions can be conserved only by adjusting them to the changing time. In the words of the great essayist, "The voice of great events is proclaiming to us. Reform if you would preserve." I am that kind of conservative because I am that kind of liberal.

-FDR
