State tax refunds taken back, Georgians left with overdraft fees

The state Department of Revenue deposited 2010 tax refunds into Georgians' accounts in the last few days then withdrew them, leaving people with strings of bank charges for overdrawn accounts.

Robert Freeman of Valdosta said he noticed his 2010 refund was in his account Sunday, and then it was missing today.

"It happened to me and my brother-in-law," Freeman said. "Unfortunately, he spent his $500 and now he is running around trying to cover bad checks."

When Freeman called his bank, a spokesman told him it had happened to a number of customers.

Alton Carter of Winder was also a victim of disappearing money.

4. That still might not protect you.
Years ago (mid 90's) my father was getting payroll checks that would bounce from time to time. The payroll checks were drawn on a different bank than the one he used. He began cashing his paychecks from the bank they were drawn on and depositing the cash into his own bank. Low and behold one of the checks bounced again and the bank that he cashed the check at had the money taken from his bank. The 2 banks were not affiliated in any way.

Luckily his previous 20 year banking history was flawless and that helped getting the overdraft fees removed. We were simply all amazed that these banks could do this to him. The banks are in it for themselves, regardless of what bank you use. Yes, some are better than others, but in the end they will watch their interests before any of their customers.

3. What a crock
from article at link:

Reg Lansbury, a spokesman for the Department of Revenue, said it was getting complaints, but he had no answers.

"We know there is an issue, and we are trying to determine the scope of it. We are in the fact-gathering stage right now," he said.

He confirmed that the nature of the complaint was money missing from bank accounts.

"But I would say this, I wouldn't say withdrawing but rescinded refunds," Lansbury said.

Kiss this, Reg,
Sonoman
