Romney's VP Search Down To Three
Posted: Aug 08, 2012 2:20 PM EDT Updated: Aug 08, 2012 2:20 PM EDT

The final three: We can say with a high degree of confidence that Mitt Romney's vice-presidential pick has largely come down to three men: former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, U.S. Sen. Rob Portman, and House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan. And it's more than possible that Romney has already made up his mind. All three VP finalists bring something different to the table. Pawlenty is the loyal outsider, who would enable a Romney-Pawlenty ticket to run as former governors vowing to take on Washington; Pawlenty also potentially would add some blue-collar appeal to the ticket. Portman would be the insider, someone who knows the ways of Washington and who could help govern starting on Day 1. And Ryan would be the crusader, who wants to substantially transform America's entitlement programs and who would excite a good portion of the GOP's conservative base. Indeed, Ryan has emerged a VERY REAL possibility, but he also brings the most risk. If Romney selects him, it's more than conceivable that the dominant campaign discussion in the fall won't be the economy -- but rather the deficit and Medicare. Of course, there was already a good chance the Ryan plan will get plenty attention regardless of Romney's VP pick.

--------------------

Portman looks like 50% each of Mitt and John Edwards, not sure that would work, but he's the likely pick, imo. Ryan is so young and so desiring to destroy the social safety net, that I think he's a big sign that says, "big mistake" if Mitt's goes that route (regardless of those beautiful eyes, ha), and Pawlenty, well, aw shucks... Timmy's just along for the ride. I'm sure if he's wanting to strike fear into Biden about a debate sparring partner, he'll choose him.

1. I'd rather see the tax returns than know his VP pick.

4. touche!
good post :)

I like the 2nd reply, too, because Mitt's compass only knows how to make cash however he can, and is an oaf politically and picking Ryan would be "typical" from him. ha

12. Yep. Something in his returns may at least be interesting and relevant, unlike

Portman, Ryan and T Paw. (The most interesting thing about T-Paw is the nickname--and Colbert gave him that.)

Every time Romney is in hot water, they shills trot out the same tired schtick. "Oh, which, oh which interchangeable WASP male will Romney ever pick? Pawlenty or Portman?"

And then some Republican will throw in some other names, like Christie and Rayan, to spice up the conversation.

However, then some Republican, maybe even the same one who brought up the other names to begin with, will swill say, "Well, anything is possible, but I think the odds are it will be Pawlenty or Portman. Still, there's always a slight chance....."

I, too, think it will be either Portman Pawlenty. There is always the outside chance it will Pawlenty Portman, though. ;-)

(Their last names even start with the same letter, for pity sake. That means the RNC can start monogramming the towels, even before Romney makes the announcement.)

Unless there is something somewhere we don't know yet, neither Pawlenty nor Portman will give anyone a reason to vote for Romney, but, then again, neither of them will give anyone a reason to vote against Romney.

Anyway that was one of the lessons of the Palin candidacy. You don't want a VP who maybe attracts some of the base, but sucks all the oxygen out of your campaign and is too extreme for the indies, which this country has become 100% about. Not only at election time either.

Of course that leaves the 92% unhappy with their elected officials most of the time, but who cares?

Oh, and once something happens once in politics, that means it will happen forevermore. That seems to the conventional wisdom anyway.

In any event, once one fact pattern causes a problem, politician steer clear of it ever after, even if they misdiagnosed. For instance, it entirely possible that McCain lost because of McCain and would have lost even if his running mate were a mash up between Einstein and Ghandi. Nonethess, we will probably never see another Palin, unless the entire country starts acting just like her. Then, maybe they will dare to run someone like her again.

It would be hysterically funny if it weren't so danged unfunny.

Then again, John Stewart and Stephen Colbert seem to be doing okay mocking it all.

Meanwhile, though, we still haven't seen the returns or heard a single good reason why Romney won't produce them. And his European trip was still a pathetic comedy of lame errors, very much unlike Obama's rock concert tour of Europe in 2008. And so on. But we are not unbundling those things anymore, or asking what they may mean about Romney as a candidate and a human being and a head of state.

So shills like Chuck Todd have done their jobs.

3. Three boring ass ultra-conservative white guys... I predict a loss in Nov.
Heh, I was worried about Marco Rubio but it turns out he was not naturalized, right?

6. I was worried about mr credit card, too. turns out his numerous issues are too much for mittens
that, or they're trying to trick the Obama camp, and Rubio is really the choice. I don't think so, though. I think it's one of the two on the left in that pick.

but, yeah, I agree with No Elephants, I'd rather see those tax returns than know his pick for VP loser. ha

10. As Colbert might say, "It's funny 'cause it's true."
And it never gets old.

However, I would rather have a boring Republican than the other kinds of Republican, such as insidious (e.g., Rove) or plain nutty, e.g., McCain and Palin. But, ultimately, the best kind of Republican is the Socialist Republican.

13. If wiki edits on their pages are any indication, Portman is the guy, he's leading Rubio 2-1 in edits
I think Rubio is an underdog secretive potential pick, and the amount of edits made to his page in the past couple days argues that fact, but Portman leads everyone in wiki page edits. So, my guess still stands with him.

I wonder when Portman's announced, if he'll call for Romney to release his tax returns! haha... then it'd be truly newsworthy. Otherwise, as I said, he seems like the safe insider pick that would make Boehner-types very happy.

14. I'm just glad Christie's not on that list! Mittens shoots himsef
in the foot DAILY and sometimes more than once, and I'm confident that he can't winon his own. Each of those guys has an attractivity problem of his own, but Christy both scared & worried me. He's a real AH, but he has the verbal ability to connect with a lot of different people. Putting him on the ticket worrried me.
