Rupert Murdoch set to arrive in UK with News Corp mired in crisis
Source: Guardian

Rupert Murdoch is due in London next week, just as his company's attempts to close down the phone hacking crisis are in tatters.

Murdoch tried to keep phone hacking cases out of the courts and out of the public eye through confidential settlements with the likes of football boss Gordon Taylor and PR guru Max Clifford. When that failed, the publisher of the News of the World insisted that phone hacking was the action of a single "rogue reporter" – jailed former royal editor Clive Goodman – and its executives chose to lash out.

Rebekah Brooks – the former editor of the News of the World, the Sun and now chief executive of News International, News Corp's UK arm – blamed this newspaper. When the Guardian reported there were potentially thousands of victims of phone hacking, her message was clear: "The Guardian coverage, we believe, has substantially and likely deliberately misled the British public."

Now, after Andy Coulson's departure from David Cameron's side, it is clear both strategies have failed, just as News Corp tries to win approval for his £8bn takeover of BSkyB. With News Corp mired in crisis, Murdoch's arrival is timely – because in the end no decision of significance can be taken without him at the company he has built over half a century.

Wouldn't it be nice if there was thousands of screaming protesters to meet him at the airport?

1. K&R- I was going to post that it would be great if his plane crashed, but
that just wouldn't be right...

I am ashamed for even thinking that...;)

2. But if he were taken into custody upon arrival ...
... that, on the other hand, would be totally right and entirely justified.

3. I am also ashamed
for thinking it wouldn't be right unless his sons were also on the plane. I must sit in a corner and clear my head of these dark thoughts. I apologize for my evil.

7. I think you should be ashamed...
but if you were thinking Rupert was piloting it himself with no other persons aboard then you're deserving some latitude.

11. Did you hear the one about;
A plane is going down and there's only enough parachutes for the captain and co-captain? They offer their chutes to Rupert and when he grabs for them, the captains pull them back and say 'psyche.' They then jump out the side door and the plane crashes into the ground 30 seconds later at 400 mph. The only survivor was the truth for Rupert left everything to his sort of Liberal Trophy Wife.

Rupert's sons' heads exploded 2 years later when SCOTUS ruled against having the will thrown out.

At least that is how my dream went. There was a chalkboard involved and some fat druggie radio announcer screaming something about little boys and Viagra that live in the Dominican Republic but I could not place the references.

10. Yes you should. We want the bastard at the helm for at least...
...a little bit longer. Rupe is losing the plot, and people who lose the plot can fuck up big time.

I don't know how like his dad Lachlan is, but he IS a hell of a lot younger and potentially a far greater danger than his father.

5. Whatever happened to who, what, when and where?
I read that entire Guardian piece and don't have the vaguest idea what's happened or how significant it is.

6. The funny thing is
there is probably more interest in the subject here on DU than the whole of the UK put together.

I've long suspected Newscorp was a criminal enterprise.
