The Defense Authorization bill is now on the Senate floor with troubling provisions that would give the President — and all future presidents — the authority to indefinitely imprison people, without charge or trial, both abroad and inside the United States and would mandate military detention of some civilians who would otherwise be outside of military control. The indefinite detention without charge or trial provisions are so harmful that the Obama White House has threatened to veto the bill if they are not removed from it.

Urge your senators to vote YES on the Udall amendment to the Defense Authorization bill which would remove the harmful provisions from the bill and in their place, mandate a process for Congress to use an orderly process to consider whether any detention legislation is needed.

UPDATE: Don’t be confused by anyone claiming that the indefinite detention legislation does not apply to American citizens. It does. There is an exemption for American citizens from the mandatory detention requirement (section 1032 of the bill), but no exemption for American citizens from the authorization to use the military to indefinitely detain people without charge or trial (section 1013 of the bill). So, the result is that, under the bill, the military has the power to indefinitely imprison American citizens, but it does not have to use its power unless ordered to do so.

9. Done. This bill is horrible. Indefinite "detention" and it militarizes

local police work even more because if a person is suspected of terrorist associations, it requires them to be turned over to the military -- and the Feds get to define who is a terrorist.

still leaves us with a bad bill. Either version constitutes
a wet dream for the Pentagon. By the way, the civi liberties
threatened by the inclusion of the "bad" provisions? Already
gone, sorry to say.

Looks like another attempt by our calculating Congress to
pull a bait and switch and get us to accept (with relief, sadly enough) another
boated budget request from the DoD.
