Where is the most reliable and cheapest place to obtain a Domain name?
I know you can purchase them through your web host, but I would like to purchase a few extra ones to lock down the names early, so I don't want to pay any middle man costs.

2. 1and1.com is reliable.
They're under $10/year. I think there are places where you can find $5 or under. There might be some cyber Monday deals available.

16. You can use the provider of your choice.
I have several domains I got at 1and1, but I use another service for hosting.

18. I totally missed that! I've thought about moving because of their advertising
Promoting women as purely sexual objects and supporting NASCAR are not things I want to support.

I have my hosting somewhere else, and I can move the domain registrations but none of them are due for renewal any time soon. I'll look at moving them when I have to renew.

6. +1 for Namecheap
Edited on Tue Nov-29-11 12:34 AM by Goldom
Switched when they had a sale for GoDaddy customers unhappy with its CEO's elephant hunting antics. Cheaper and less sleazy.

7. If you want REALLY cheap names
go to www.domainsarefree.com. They are $3.95 each.

You MUST do the domain search from the box on the right hand side of the page. If you use the main domain name lookup in the center of the page, it costs $14.95. Make sure and use the right side to look it up.

After you buy the domain, you'll administer it at globat.com

The renewal rate is $14.95 each year, so you'll want to transfer it to a less expensive one at least two months before it's going to expire.

If you're willing to spend a little more money, I recommend fxdomains.com. They are a GoDaddy reseller, and are a couple of bucks cheaper ($8 I think, for new names, $10 to renew). I've used them for many years, and they've always been 100 percent reliable for domain names and hosting.

8. BlueHost, but they are from Utah if anyone has a problem with that.

http://www.bluehost.com/cgi/info/hosting_features

First year is free for domain name, $10/year thereafter.

Highly rated. Very reliable.

Has a chat feature for instant help whenever there is a problem.

9. DreamHost. Not the cheapest, but a good value, and reliable,
and your info won't be searchable on the web.

11. I'm not thrilled with the hunting scandal, but GoDaddy is cheap and reliable.
They also have excellent tech support. The site can be a bit difficult to navigate at first, but I know how to get around in it now.

14. Yep. Been with them for about 10 years. I would stay away from Yahoo
they love luring you in with the 1.99, but they have horrible tech support, no clear number, and they jack the prices up dramatically in the second year.

20. Please consider name.com

Name.com has also been providing tech and other support to Denver OWS.

I deal with domain names for a living, and you do not want to know some of the unpublished billing practices of 1&1, GoDaddy, and others mentioned in this thread.

Very easy to do everything, no problems. I have 4 names registered with them.
