Time is right for Native in Congress
The 34-year-old Harvard law grad, originally from Kayenta, thinks she stands a pretty good chance of winning the Democratic nomination and defeating Republican incumbent Paul Gosar - especially if the Navajo Nation and 10 other Arizona tribes can convince the state of Arizona to redraw District 1 their way.

If she is elected, it will be the first time Arizona has elected a Native American to Congress, and she will be the first Native woman to represent any state.

6. We tried to put an Alaska Native woman into Congress in 2006
Edited on Tue Nov-29-11 12:31 AM by Blue_In_AK
but she got no help from the DCCC and had to run on a shoestring. Even so, she got 40% of the votes against Don Young (before his ethics issues were common knowledge), better than any other candidate who has run against him before or since. She ran again in 2008, but the DCCC-backed candidate who defeated her in the primary because he had the bucks didn't do nearly as well against Don Young as Diane Benson had done in 2006. We felt betrayed by the party. With more support from the Democratic Party (both state and national) that seat currently being semi-occupied by crazy, obnoxious old Don Young would have been honorably held by a strong progressive Native woman.

Good luck with your quest. I think it's way past time.

If you're curious, here's a very nice article about Diane Benson. She's a close friend of mine and a wonderful person. http://dailygotham.com/blog/mole333/diane_benson_for_congress_its_the_war_stupid
