MAP OF THE DAY: Every Traffic Fatality In The US Since 2001
There were 369,629 fatalities in U.S. traffic accidents between 2001 and 2009, according to the National Highway Safety Administration.

Transport data mapping experts ITO World plotted every one of them on an incredible interactive map hosted by The Guardian. Purple represents vehicle occupant deaths, which unsurprisingly account for the majority of fatalities. Blue is for pedestrians, green cyclists and yellow motorcyclists.

1. Pretty much coincides with a population map combined with a highway map...
Sad to see.

2. Misleading map
Doesn't account for population density. For example, my own Commonwealth of Massachusetts has the lowest vehicle fatality rate per mile traveled in the country, but it looks nasty on that map.

3. Fatalities per 100,000 licensed Drivers
1994: 23.21
1995: 23.68

1994-1995 represented the only year increase on the list. By 2009 we have this:
2009: 16.13

Looks like we are getting safer.

5. Considering the number of way people drive in my neighborhood...
...I'm shocked there has been only 4 fatalities (3 vehicle, 1 pedestrian) since 2001 within 2 miles of me. And none of them were at the places where I figured they would be. The place where people run red lights with reckless abandon and where I had my very first accident.

8. Based on my unscientific observations, the higher the traffic density, the faster people drive. n/t

9. Because the less risk of getting a ticket for each driver..
There may be more overall enforcement in heavy traffic areas but they have to pluck individual fish from a mighty river..

Plus having someone so close behind you that you can tell whether they need their eyebrows waxed tends to make most people speed up.

10. One weird statistic: Motorcyclist deaths have more than doubled in the last 10 years of so.
More of them on the road? Helmet laws? Seems strange given the decline in overall MV deaths.

12. Based on the ration of traffic deaths to US terrorism deaths...
We should forget making war and be spending trillions of dollars making the highways safer. It would sure save a hell of a lot more lives than this phoney war on terrorism bullshit.
