Occupy Chicago joins the party

By NEIL STEINBERG nsteinberg@suntimes.com November 17, 2011 6:22PM

<snip>I agree with those goals. I’m in the 99 percent. Where they lose me is the “and we’ll stand in the street until change happens” part. Because the Republicans, having gone through their own experiment in social protest, when it was warmer, are now hitching up their foaming horses to the civic wagon and getting ready to climb into the driver’s seat, give the reins a snap, and drive the country off in the opposite direction.

Leaving La Salle Street, I stopped in at the CVS at Washington and Wells to warm up. Customers were waiting at four automatic “Express Checkout” units, scanning and bagging their own gum and shampoo, under the watchful eye of a single CVS employee, while three cash registers sat unused. That means two clerks who once rang up sales now aren’t needed, part of the huge economic forces — aided by government bumbling, business scheming and public complicity — that are grinding regular people to powder.

How is that going to be chanted away? How long must I stand in the street before a white-collar worker in India stops being eager to earn $6,000 a year?

But I hadn’t seen the day’s highlight. Off to the Thompson Center at the appointed hour. A good turnout, heavy on labor types, nearly filling the little plaza, a few speeches, then hundreds marched up La Salle Street, across Wacker and blocking the La Salle Street Bridge at rush hour as some sat down and 46 were ticketed by police as the sun set, one day closer to President Mitt Romney.

2. OWS is first and foremost about sparking a much-needed conversation...
... that wasn't really raking place (except in the liberal/progressive blogosphere). Steinberg, in this piece, sounds like one more clueless party apparatchik who simply doesn't get it.

4. Obama didn't bring any message to them, so they brought one to him...
Anyone that finds fault with that is worthless.

8. Agreed. And Obama handled it well. He didn't cower or
snub them but asked to let him finish his speech then they could have a turn. He's the first whose acted like a leader should. Good for him, good for OCCUPY for getting the POTUS's ear.

6. I would imagine they are sitting there confused.

Afterall, it messes up the messages they believe in and the fantasy world of their minds they live in. They are probably checking the holy scriptures of the shopping mall for understanding.

9. Well, after they get them back from the many posing as "liberals"
who are far more vicious toward the President than the baggers.

10. OWS isn't liberal or worried about any politician's feelings. they have a message and are getting
VERY effective at delivering it every day now.....

12. Forgive me, as I have no polite way to state this, but I don't give a
flying fiddlers fuck about what the average southern republican, and I'm sorry they've infected parts of the rest of the nation, thinks, if they really think about this or much of anything else.

Truly, I don't give a flying fiddlers fuck what they, if they can muster the energy to think, might have to say about this. I apologize for the language, but you asked.
