Poor Rachel from Card Services.
Of a sudden those calls now show up on my caller ID as "Phone Scam" followed by the number.

I am on the Do Not Call list by Rachel persists.

1. Rachel calls us twice a week!
This has been going on for at least a year and a half. Would that she would show up as such on our caller ID.

"She" always calls at some critical moment--I'm deep in the midst of deadline work that demands close attention; I'm in the middle of changing the dressing on my husband's surgical wound; the guests just rang the doorbell for our dinner party.

Now, whenever the phone rings without an identifiable number, we always hesitate and say, "It's probably Rachel." Unfortunately, one or two of my clients (writers) have "private caller" as their ID, so I have to answer.

4. "It's probably Rachel."
LOL !!

I've had that thought myself.

Now I'm wondering who managed to get it to show as "phone scam" - gotta love that.

9. I do not answer "private caller" calls...none of them
If caller ID does not identify them, they are toast. I will not play favor to those who wish to remain anonymous. So, if you want to contact me, you better make sure your ID shows up.

Besides RAchelat card services, I do not answer FOP (friends of the police) calls. They call twice a week although I have never, and will never, contribute to them. I don't do surveys or opinion polls, either.

12. I got a call from Cancer Support Services recently
I was expecting a return call from a friend so I picked up without looking.

I researched them after I hung up - most of their income goes to fund raising with only about 17% going to services for cancer patients.

14. I feel the same way. Anyone that I want to talk to shows up with a name & number.

7. Rachel got $50 to record that message in 2007, and hasn't gotten a dime since.
Unless she got some sort of royalty / residuals deal for every time the robocall is made. Which I seriously doubt.

8. I actually called the FCC about this
Apparently even with someone making literally millions of spam calls over a period of years, the authorities have no idea who is behind it or where the calls are coming from.

Meanwhile, it would probably take them 15 minutes to summon up every detail of my life from government databases. But tracking down a major criminal organization? They can't do it. Either that, or they won't do it, maybe whoever is in charge of enforcement is actually the one running the scam, that would be right in line with everything else that is going on.

10. Good point.
These days it seems like they know everything about citizens but business is free to do whatever they like.

13. I tried to talk to Rachel once
we were getting a pile of calls so once I tried to speak with someone and the damned thing never even bothered connecting. Maybe they knew there was an above average shot at getting an earful of profanity.

15. Here's how I deal with these people.
I pretend to be interested. I tell them I have about $9000 of credit card debt, at 19% interest, and that I would love to lower my interest rate. I keep them on hold for a few minutes while "going to look for my card". I pretend there is someone at the door and keep them on hold for a few more minutes. I give them a fake card number (still beginning with 5466). I transpose a couple of digits of the customer service phone number for the credit card (which they ask for). When it doesn't work I give them the correct customer service phone number, but they are still trying with the fake credit card number. I then tell them that I had the expiration date wrong. Basically I try to waste their time for as long as I feel like. I then tell them that I was making it all up to waste their time as punishment for calling people on the "do not call" list. All of a sudden, "sweetie" and "honey" is replaced by "fuck you" and threats to call me every day from now on (which they invariably do not follow through on as they know that all they will do is waste their scamsters' valuable time again).

21. You can press 1 to be connected to a live person.
Whose time you can then attempt to waste for as long as possible.

17. It's a new version of the "Make money at home stuffing envelopes!!!" schemes.
Pity the poor schmucks who buy into the scheme.

I used to get these calls eventhough I am on the DNC list. So last year I reported them to the FCC, two or three times, I documented the instances. I haven't heard a peep out of them since. They may return, but I'll report them again. Each and every call.
