but if that is the aim, it's too late, imo.

53. Okay, Sparky, GIVE us a rational reason to close the airspace.
The police don't want to be the ones seen "doing it" if it all goes in the toilet for them.

Why is that so hard for you to understand?

50. Police helicopters fly about 500 feet lower than news helicopters
Every city has regulations to allow both law enforcement and the news media do their respective jobs safely. With gyro-stabilized cameras and extreme telephoto lenses, the broadcast media is able to zoom in on the action on the ground.

I didn't know a city could designate a no-fly zone. I thought only the FAA and the military had this power.

they are not going to put themselves in the middle of a potentially messy political situation - they would not have a valid reason to say no.

Edited on Fri Nov-18-11 04:21 PM by ProgressiveProfessor
The person who started the thread on it yesterday later posted NBC retracted the erroneous tweet.

City does not control airspace, the FAA does. The FAA never instituted a TFR over the park.

9. Isn't this twice now?
And when the hell has this ever been done before regarding any kind of protest action?

Who in their right minds thinks this is okay or in any way acceptable?

But those who stand with the police in this matter have a problem. Everyone watching this can now quite justifiably say that the police very clearly are planning on/counting on having something to hide by the end of this.

The worst case is that they're closing the airspace because they intend to use live ammunition and they don't want the press to have any chance of IDing who fired when and from where. A more mild scenario involves more Scott Olsens getting hit with canisters etc. In either case, this places a pall of suspicion on any violence committed by the police present once the airspace is closed.

22. They cannot enforce a no fly zone.
Even if they do have MANPADS, they are not going to shoot down civilian aircraft under these circumstances.

If the media really wanted pictures, they would already have locations allocated in/on local buildings and the cops could do *nothing*.

NYPD will get spanked by the FAA if they start declaring closed airspace.

Asking another helo to move up a little bit so there is less mutual risk is understandable.

43. If it was a declared TFR it would be have to be announced
and available to aviators via the Flight Service Station network. Best I can tell there is not one. If it is not announced it does not exist and can not be enforced.

Closing airspace so that the public can't see the Tianenmen square 2.0 is bad governance.

If the FAA is behind it then so is Obama.

62. At the bottom of the page is this disclaimer:
"Depicted TFR data may not be a complete listing. "

I agree that NYPD doesn't have the inherent authority to close airspace, but if working with a federal agency, it could happen. And would probably not be publicized.
