19. An anecdote about Talullah Bankhead

People of a certain (ahem) age might recall her as the woman who played Samantha's mother Endora on "Bewitched," but Talullah Bankhead was an accomplished actress on stage. Later in her career, she was in a play opposite a young up-and-comer. During rehearsals, young actress opined to her friends how decrepit Bankhead was, and how she could out-act her any day of the week, and twice on Sundays. Bankhead overheard the boasting, and told the young actress that she could upstage her without even being on stage.

In a pivotal scene, the characters square off, with Bankhead draining her cocktail and leaving the stage just prior to the younger actress' big soliloquy. During the performance, the two women have their argument, Bankhead emptied her glass, perched it precariously on the very edge of the table and left the stage. Every eye in the place is locked on that glass, seemingly ready to topple and shatter at any second, and nobody's listening to the young actress. What nobody knew was that Bankhead had put Scotch tape on the bottom of the glass.

I think Nancy Pelosi is cut from the same cloth.
