I am an Obama supporter and I am pro-OWS
I don't understand those who think one can't be both.

I think we need to direct our message to Congress, since they write the laws and stuff. Sure, send the message loud and clear to the President, of course. then hammer on Congress, with relenting, until they take steps to remedy the problem.

Julie

1. Where did you read people say you cannot be both?
First I've heard of this meme.

4. I'm right with you
I'm too much of an individualist to be in complete lockstep with either OWS or Obama (and I suspect that's true of most people here). But I strongly support both. Congress makes the laws and they should be the focus of our efforts to change Wall Street.

5. we have pills for that
. . . no, just kidding. That would seem to me to be a natural inclination for many self-identified Democrats. We fight to effect change within the system. We aren't going to just abandon that fight and take to the streets. We intend to leverage the angst and agitation into meaningful action. That political progression has been the hallmark of most of our nation's transformational protest movements.

7. i am both.
i do wish he would throw some support to OWS even if it's only in a speech.
prosecutions of the criminals on wall street and in the big banks would be even better. and let the fucking tax cuts expire, stop talking about it just do it. this of course may not be entirely up to the president.

22. I wish Obama would fire Geithner, pressure Bernanke to resign
and give back the campaign money Goldman Sucks gave him. Then prosecute the big shots on Wall Street--the arrogant CEOs who made out like the bandits they are. Then he should tell Homeland Security to call off the dogs attacking OWs protesters unless there's ironclad proof of the right-wing rumors of violent protesters (which there is none).
One more thing, he should quit trying to "reach out to Republicans" because the repukes only want to reach out and choke him. There's no negotiating with fanatics, and the GOPredators are such.

23. Exactly, Julie. And it's particularly strange when the president has already voiced his SUPPORT
of OWS that some here try to act as though supporting OWS and supporting the president are mutually exclusive. They aren't.

Of course, many of these same folks also act as though OWS is protesting the president and not the country's corporate, economic and political structure of the last 30 years or so, so maybe it's just something in the water...

31. He never voiced his support of OWS
He has clearly voiced his support of Egyptian protesters, but not those here in America. He condemned the use of force against peaceful protestors in the Middle East. He has NOT condemned the use of force against OWS supporters. It's very clear that he sides with the 1%.

25. Tim Geithner?
Do you think Obama's hand-picked Secretary of the Treasury shares OWS goals?

How about Bob Rubin? Or Ben Bernanke? Larry Summers?

Sorry, but Obama can say whatever he wants about OWS, but the simple fact that Tim Geithner is his Treasury Secretary makes your point absurd.

26. I agree....
I find it particularly egregious when I see posts castigating the President and the Democrats for not getting directly involved wrt the OWS protests. I distinctly remember the outrage expressed here (and legitimately, imo) when the Repub congress members involved themselves in the teabagger 'rallies', posts pointing out how their participation showed how much the teabaggers' rallies were NOT genuine, not organic.

OWS is non-partisan and that is one of it's STRONGEST messages, imo.

Congress IS the problem, there is NO doubt.

Bottom line is there will either be a Democratic President in the WH after the November, 2012 election or there will be a Republican President in the WH after the November 2012 election. Regardless of where one sits on the question of the need for a multi-party system, there will be NO other party outside of the Republican or Democratic ones who will win the WH, win enough seats to hold the majority in the House or the Senate.

Given that reality, vote wisely. Canadians didn't and we now have a majority neo-con government dismantling much of what DUers have admired about our country.

You can't thank a soldier for their service if you are against war... and people who think you can't hate abortion and be pro-choice... I think it shows a limited ability to reason and no sense of shades of grey.

37. Most of the 99% (the people, not the movement) still support our status quo government....

If some members of OWS think they can convince a majority of people to overthrow government or to replace capitalism with socialism, then they may be fighting a very difficult uphill battle. Having said that, the activism that is taking place is fantastic and I think the power of the movement lies in remaining separate from the political process. We can certainly effect politcal change without directly participating in it, voting aside. People should not be forced to vote if they think it is ineffective, that is part of the message.
