Thanksgiving--what does shopping Ebay for Thanksgiving figurines tell you about what the holiday was
Edited on Thu Nov-17-11 10:35 AM by The Backlash Cometh
about?

Plug in the search engine for Thanksgiving figurines and you will find pages of pilgrim boys, girls, women and men laden with harvest bounty. Maybe every twelfth figurine you'll find an indian.

Does everyone remember Thanksgiving the same way? The first pilgrims were having a hard time and the indians came to share what they had? Or has that been revised? Because, you forget that minor point and it's just another Tea Party dinner.

1. I remember "pilgrim" boy & girl candles from the early 70's.
I still don't understand the "Black Friday" mentality - camp outside a store and fight a mob to get a few bucks off on something you probably don't need anyway? No thank you.

5. A Stan Freberg number I hadn't heard before...thanks!
Take an Indian to lunch this week
Show him we're a regular bunch this week
Show him we're as liberal as can be
Let him know he's almost as good as we

Make a feathered friend feel fed this week
Overlook the fact he's red this week
Let him share out Quaker Oats
'Cause he's useful when he votes
Take an Indian to lunch

Two, four, six, eight, who do we tolerate?
Indians, Indians, rah, rah, rah!

4. I guess that's taught in schools outside of Louisiana. I can't see how that part of American
would have been important to us anyway.

6. It's probably only telling you about ...
... the typical buyer of kitschy figurines. I don't know very many people who would want to buy such things, and the few who would are exactly the sort of people who subscribe to a very distorted view of history.

7. My little 5 year old great grandson knows what it is about. I was setting
in the care with them while Mom went shopping. He say "Grandma, what is thanksgiving?" I told him it was a time when we ate a meal with the whole family. He comes back with "I am thankful for my Mom and Dad." He then paused and started listing all the toys in his room. That kid has his priorities right. He never did get around to being thankful for me. He takes me for granted - Grandma is always there when he needs me.
