Democrats see minefield in Occupy protests
Source: Y!

Although both Democrats and the Occupy protesters have similar views on economic inequality and corporate responsibility, each holds the other at arm's length. There's little benefit to Democrats in opening their arms wide to a scruffy group that has erupted in violence, defied police and shown evidence of drug use while camping in public parks across the country — much as the prospect of such a pairing delights Republicans.
Many protesters, in turn, are contemptuous of Democrats, arguing that both political parties are equally beholden to corporate interests and responsible for enacting policies that have hurt the middle class.

2. My first thought. Yahoo pulled that right out of its ear. My second thought.
Yahoo either just doesn't get it or is pretending not to get it.

Other than that, I understand Mrs. Lincoln enjoyed the performance of "Our American Cousin."

"both Democrats and the Occupy protesters have similar views on economic inequality and corporate responsibility,"

4. Some Democrats, as in DLC and Blue Dog DINOs
Real Democrats, especially the Progressive Caucus, have gotten behind Occupy. I saw a YouTube video with at least 7 Democratic candidates for Congress sending petitions stating that they "stood with the 99%." My guess is that they should be called "The Occupy Caucus."

I'd like to see more Occupy candidates primary some of the corporate DINOs and restore the Democratic Party to their economic populist roots.

5. One of the big problems with OWS is that
many homeless and drug users have joined them so they can get food and shelter. So when the OD's and suicides or violence happens, it's blamed on OWS. The OWS are stuck between a rock and a hard place, on one hand, they want to help these people, and on the other hand, these people are a detriment to the movement, if they are not mentally well. This is the reason the cops are telling those getting out of jail to go to the OWS encampments, they are hoping that violence breaks out. I'm guessing they would have a different take on it, if it were their children in the park.

8. PS GOP is very worried OWS benefitting dems, hurting their dominant long term messaging
Edited on Thu Nov-17-11 10:32 AM by certainot
the fact that limbaugh is suggesting the dem party is worried (as opposed to DLC) makes it clear they're worried.

while OWS has been one of the few political entities to break through the GOP wall st stranglehold on messaging (largely because of ignored talk radio) when /if the protests slack off the talk radio wall street megaphone to 50 mil a week will not stop.

if the right thought OWS was a problem for the dem party they wouldn't be attacking OWS from their best weapon -1000 stations and their local blowhards. and the head of the party would not be saying shit like this every day (below):

on the other hand OWS can hurt all progressive issues and the prospect of the dem party being a vehicle for reform (you'd be stupid to think the GOP would be that tool), if the lft keeps ignoring the rights best weapon as it pounds non stop on OWS and is allowed to define it with unchallenged shit like this to 50 mil a week:

Here's what Limbaugh said in first hour this morning....

praphrasing Limbaugh:

xxxxxx'
Bloomberg liberated Zuccotti Park.
lousy hippies thieves rapists purse snatchers
sexually transmitted diseases, murder, filth, gunfire, scabies
The protestors are so used to urinating and defecating in the streets so when they go back home to their parents they might need to be housebroken again. They’re going to have to put some newspaper down.
endless parade of human debris,
whining little wimps
looking for free meals free drugs free sex
it was never big, never any public support, not the backbone of America
white house wanted bloomberg to get them out because it was one big ad for the dem party.
