You Know Those $1.8 Billion Dollar DDG-51 Destroyers We're Building?
unhappycamper note: Since the ‘Pentagon’ (DoD? Gannett?) has ‘requested’ that I only post one paragraph from articles on Army Times, and Airforce Times, To keep in that same (new) tradition, I will also do the same for for articles on Navy Times, Marine Corps Times, stripes.com and military.com.
To read the article in the military's own words, you will need to click the link.

Read all about Fair Use here.

unhappycamper summary of this article: Looks like the price of naval poker is going up.....

To recap:

Our next new aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R Ford, is going to cost around $40 billion dollars or so to build.

Our new Zumwalt-class destroyers are going to cost around $5 billion dollars each.

Our new LCS ships are going to cost around $500 million dollars each.

Our new Virgina-class submarines are going to cost somewhere between $5 ~ $7 billion dollars each.

This crap is getting expensive.

Report: Cost spike for Navy’s next DDGs
By Philip Ewing Wednesday, November 16th, 2011 4:51 pm

Sam LaGrone of Jane’s Navy International writes that according to the latest projections, the new Flight III versions of the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer could cost between $3 and nearly $4 billion apiece, as much as double today’s Flight II version. That’s despite Navy officials’ onetime belief that restarting production of DDG 51s made sense because it would save money as compared with their previous planned run of next-generation Zumwalt-class destroyers.

1. Imagine all that money going to destroyers...
... that could be paying for both healthcare and the college education
of every citizen in the USA.

8. Actually building these things is providing a lot of US jobs.
Mine is one of them.

They will also incorporate hybrid propulsion technology which will significantly reduce their fuel usage.

12. econ 101... military spending has a negative effect on the economy.
if you designed stuff for the common good you would be creating a positive effect on the economy.

14. And even our greatest soldier Eisenhower warned of the dangerous impact
that building unnecessary military toys was on the overall economy and the overall society.

5. Freedom may not be free, but we are mortgaging our future
to buy these toys. Soon there will be nothing left to defend.
