Addressing a hundreds-strong throng of Occupy Seattle protesters, Cornel West offered them words of hope while castigating Seattle police and leaders for a violent altercation with protesters Tuesday night.
“They ought to be ashamed,” said West, a civil rights activist and Princeton University professor who addressed protesters Wednesday afternoon outside Seattle Central Community College. “We need accountability … and we need them to take responsibility.”
West’s comments followed a question from one of about 200 protesters gathered outside the Capitol Hill college. Speakers before and after the noted social critic also blasted police for pepper-spraying protesters – including an elderly woman and several members of the clergy – Tuesday night at Westlake Park in downtown Seattle.
In town on his way to Oakland, Calif., to join in protests there, West was greeted with cheers as he arrived at the Seattle Central pavilion.
