Blocking traffic - bad tactic. News viewers think "Why they harm average Joe? I wouldnt want them
blocking ME on my way somewhere...like to an ER or to a highly critical meeting. "

Really bad to harm the average citizen.

Aim tactics at opponents, not the people you want to persuade to join you.

26. No, some people don't get it.
The good news is those of us sitting around criticizing at home will still benefit from all the rights their beatings, arrests, hospitalizations, and at some point will lead to. Then they/we will claim we were in solidarity with the inconveniences they caused the rest of us poor slobs.

6. Heaven forbid they need to clear an accident,
or do some minor construction on a road. They might block some "ME" from going to where said person has to be.

Just leave the roads go to hell, let the accidents lie there, rather than "harm" someone.

Part of this is to bring attention to what is going on, and get people to talk about it. I see it all the time. Everyone is in such a hurry. If you need to be somewhere, LEAVE EARLIER!

10. THAT is not a problem. Bloomberg is so concerned with the public's safety that he will clear the
airspace above the city in case of emergencies. Yes, he cares THAT much!

7. Imagine how some white folk felt during the civil rights movement
There were sit ins at some restaurants where they would only serve whites, and those white customers were deprived of their favorite place to eat lunch/dinner... come on, the point is not always about you, but the larger picture. And I am a news viewer and wouldn't think those things you described, speak for yourself please.

8. I do believe that blocking traffic is not right. A person in an ambulance could easily die.
It could be a child or an adult. There are plenty of places to occupy other than traffic in the roads. At some point Occupy can cross the line and it becomes something the average person dislikes. We do not want that. We want people to stand with them, not against them. It has to be peaceful.

18. Do you really believe the demonstrators would not allow an ambulance to pass?

It's time to change this nation. A few people might be 'inconvenienced'.

Those on the thread who see stopped traffic as just an inconvenience must have never had a health crisis of a family member.

Or a job related emergency.

Even in a general strike, vital services are usually urged to continue- ER's, grocers, TRAFFIC, electricity....the essentials.

Bill of Rights trumps local traffic laws.........

on the other hand, a lot of folks are happy to take their rights with limitations.

11. Of course it doesn't!
The bill of rights does not give you the right to jaywalk, any more than it gives you the right to freely assemble on someone else's private property.

17. No rights elaborated in the Bill of Right are absolute. All have
restrictions and limitations. Certainly preserving public safety can and does trump your right to demonstrate.

They had been peacefully protesting in the park and not inconveniencing the general public. The Mayor forced them into the streets.

23. Now that I've read all the comments
trashing the OP - perhaps you can listen to what he/she was trying to say. We all saw the poll yesterday that OWS is losing support and shit like this is why. So you can continue to bitch about what is surely a constitutional right to assemble and speak and also continue to lose support when you make it harder for the people who live and work in the area OR you can try and use methods that will persuade and gain you support.

24. Destroying the planet and pushing billions of humans into poverty and death
Bad tactic. I think "Why do they harm the average Joe? I wouldn't want them destroying my planet and taking away my security and quality of life. I wouldn't want them killing ME, or letting the planet die."

Really bad to harm the average citizen.

Aim tactics at the people killing the world, not the people trying to save it.

28. Yeah.
Don't block traffic -- line the sidewalks around major intersections. Just as much visibility to drivers, and it won't alienate them.
