those of us who have been covering OWS have seen something incredible start to happen. First it is the chants. We live in a culture where the INDIVIDUAL is cherished and INDIVIDUALS are what counts. The Commons, the common space and social goods have been de-emphasized over the last thirty to forty years. The language is not of the I... it is of the OUR.
Who'se Streets, OUR streets, is not accidental. This is quite possibly a change. It is about the WE... not the ME.
Here is another, which I have witnessed with my own eyes. And yes Tea parties are welcomed.
I saw the most beautiful discussion on Single Payer Healthcare. The two people discussing this started from Libertarian land... and far left, as far as dreamy far left passes in the US. They started with the usual talking points... and then something incredible happened... they did not scream at each other. They did not demean each other. They both framed it as a right... to one it was a right of the people the other as a right to do what is good for yourself... then they kind of agreed... it is a right. They kept at this for a good half an hour. Finally they agreed that it was a HUMAN RIGHT, and just differed on how far government should be involved... not as a distant entity... as OUR GOVERNMENT,
These two went from their hard core corners to having an actual substantive discussion on a critical issue. It was no longer us vs them... it became WE.
At a linguistic level that is critical. People are getting out of their homes and talking to OTHER AMERICANS. It is not dumb republicans or crazy lib'tards... it is Americans. I have no idea if I can explain how important that is. I had tears in my eyes.
