Police clear Occupy San Diego camp, arrest 10
SAN DIEGO — Ten Occupy San Diego protesters were arrested early Wednesday as police again moved the group out of its downtown encampment near City Hall. Those detained at or near a grassy area outside the Civic Theatre included eight men and two women, ages 18 to 28.

All were jailed but one protester who was cited for "excessive noise with a sound amplification device," and released after his bullhorn was taken away. Cleaning crews arrived at 7 a.m. and the protesters had returned to resume a nearly six-week-old protest against corporate greed by mid-morning.

Their movement also shifted to court Wednesday as lawyers for the protesters sought to bar the city and its police officers from using a particular provision in the San Diego municipal code to stop them from having possessions at their gatherings.

Police said sleeping and personal belongings will no longer be tolerated at the site.

As much as I hate to say it, they will NOT make it to thanksgiving.. the camps will not make it. There are good reason (from a power perspective) for that.

1. "most of the arrests happened when protesters tried to cross a police line to get their belongings."
(facepalm)

People HAVE TO STOP COMPLYING WITH POLICE WHEN POLICE COME TO DESTROY THE CAMPS! AND MUST RETURN IMMEDIATELY, FOR AS LONG AS IT TAKES!

WTF is this surrendering to the 1% bullshit!?

3. It is called non violence
and the fact that my local rag covered that... is very significant. The small indies are starting to make a difference.

I will also start running my stories that are not accepted in my own blog now.

4. It has to depend on which might be called the "energy budget"
As long as resisting the police energizes the movement, it's a net positive. But once that kind of resistance starts to drain more energy from the movement than it adds, it becomes a negative.

The turnover point hasn't been reached yet -- but I believe it will be fairly soon, because people can only withstand so much punishment. It's a lot like the way torture works. At first, the brain starts cranking out endorphins that make it possible to bear the pain, but when the endorphins run low there is a crashout and the person is broken.

Right now, the occupiers are high on their own endorphins, and it makes them feel like they can bear anything. But it can't and won't last -- and they need to be in this for the long haul.

Moreover, as I pointed out on a thread some weeks back, anybody who's played Risk knows that trying to hold territory against a more powerful opponent never works out well.

So the challenge for the occupiers becomes one of how to maintain both public visibility and their coherence as a movement without being tied down to particular patches of physical territory. In the long run, reclaiming the commons will be essential. But in the short run -- and faced with overwhelming use of force by the police -- it's far better to be everywhere at once than to be in one fixed location.
