Toast sandwich is UK's 'cheapest meal' (BBC)
Britain's 'cheapest' lunchtime meal was unveiled by scientists on Wednesday - the toast sandwich.

The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) is reviving the mid-Victorian dish, which, unsurprisingly, consists of two slices of bread around a slice of toast.

The society is so confident in the repast, it will offer £200 to anyone who can create a cheaper alternative.

The meal, costing 7.5 pence, was first promoted by Victorian food writer Mrs Beeton.

It is taken from Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management which became a best-seller after its appearance 150 years ago next month.

We've come so far in 150 years -- NOT.

Apparently nobody told the RSC about the classic shit sandwich.

18. Not really
Even if it was made from supermarket white sliced, it would still contain traces of added vitamins and minerals along with the 300 or so calories.

I certainly hope no responders took this article seriously. It's a joke, a political joke at that.

19. So is a Gatorade a meal then?
How about eating a couple cockroaches? Both meet your alluded to criteria. "Traces" and calories doesn't nutrition make.

24. Then it's up to you
To define what constitutes a meal. Many Americans are OK with calling empty calories a meal and several societies eat insects. And sorry, traces elements and calories, by the broadest definition, ARE nutrition of a sort.
