...how this 'sting' operation was going to work?

Are you aware that the ATF's 'plan' according to Agents briefed by supervisory Agent Voth, was to allow the guns to 'walk', enter their serial #'s into a database and wait for them to appear at crime scenes...

Many of those crime scenes covered in the blood of innocent Mexican Citizens, police, military, and two US Federal Agents.

When Agent Voth was told by one of the Agents under him that this 'plan' would likely lead to a funeral for a Border Patrol Agent or a Cochise County (Az) LEO, he is reported to have replied "If you want to make an ommlette you have to scramble some eggs"
