How was Jean Quan turned?
She was supposed to be a progressive as mayor...but now she has permanently joined the other side.

Why did she cave in to the forces who hate her, her party, her alleged belief system(and, secretly, her ethnicity, most likely)?

What could she possibly think she is gaining from turning into Mayor-Daley-By-The-Bay?

1. The Oakland Chamber of Commerce & Oakland City Council
...apparently pressured her against OWS.

3. The C of C makes sense...but why the City Council?
Wouldn't most of them have been left-of-center?

2. Apparently, she is losing a number of her top staff ( oh and good friends) over her turn around.

I guess it remains to be seen where she is headed with her lack of support for OWS. Maybe she really never was a Progressive, who knows?

6. Oakland IS the birthplace of THIS group...

You've probably given us the explanation for that, as well.

7. Jean, your party holds the Presidency. The economy is the worst in 7 decades
Edited on Tue Nov-15-11 10:53 PM by kenny blankenship
and these "Occupy" people are protesting the economic status quo. They say the arrangement in which the richest 1% and the biggest corporations continue to accumulate wealth at the expense of the remaining 99% cannot be allowed to go forward. They are everywhere, and their movement threatens to snowball into some kind of political force with its own platform and demands, questioning and attacking the status quo. WE ARE THE STATUS QUO, JEAN. Elections are coming up. Do you want the California Democratic Party to support you or not? Then get rid of them. Clear the streets of the protesters, signs and cameras.

11. But how is doing something almost everybody in Oakland is pissed off about
going to get her another term?

It's not like people there WANT the cops to break heads. Why would they? Oakland residents know that Occupy fights for them.

12. Incumbancy and money are the greatest influences to being elected....
Edited on Tue Nov-15-11 11:18 PM by Luminous Animal
she not facing re-election for another 3 years. She can take that gamble that the Occupy movement will be quashed and its participants properly progagandized as deviants well before then. Also, she knows that Oaklanders have been electing pro-head knockers (including Jerry Brown) for decades.

9. shit guys Jerry pushed 10k residence downtown. that's your answer
she's a captive of the investment crew in this town. Jerry pushed the "uptown condos" when no one bought them they turned section 8. Jean was cool until something important happened then she caved. I bet she doesn't even realize that her career is dead. she can still hide out at the Fruitvale Safeway police office. hell no one else is there most of the time.

10. BTW, any word from the ol' Moonbeam on this?
He always liked putting the boot in himself, when it came to young activists-The Dead Kennedys were RIGHT to write "California Uber Alles" about him.

14. Probably still celebrating his veto of the farmworkers' bill
The only piece of legislation the California Assembly was going to pass in his whole term that would ever have helped farmworkers...and he vetoed it for NO GOOD FUCKING REASON.

He needs to just put the "R" by his name and be done with it.

You're only a Dem if you're Left on economics and social justice. Recycling baskets and rights bills are side issues.

16. Pressure from local businesses, contact with other mayors about #Occupy:
http://www.indybay.org/uploads/2011/11/08/11.8.11.oakland_letter_fin-mayor.pdf

"It is extremely frustrating, then, to see that our efforts to fund improvements and improve parks and public spaces, all designed to attract newbusinesses and create opportunities for new entrepreneurs and employees in Uptown and Downtown, have been threatened by weak, confusing and inconsistent messages from the City in addressing the ramifications of the Occupy Oakland protest.

The protest has been allowed to run its course. Now it’s time to focus on jobs and the economic restoration of our city. It’s time for bold leadership and forceful action, not unending social experimentation. We call upon the Oakland City Council and the Mayor of Oakland to step up and provide cohesive, common sense leadership------before it really is too late."
