Jordanian immigrants say 17-year-old was attacked because of his name

By Becky Schlikerman, Chicago Tribune reporter

4:30 a.m. CST, November 15, 2011

David Osama Haddad was taunted and harassed at school for a year, called "Little Osama" and "terrorist" and given gifts when Osama bin Laden and Moammar Gadhafi were killed, his parents said.

Though the words were hurtful, the bullying came to a head last week when a student allegedly attacked David and beat him in a hallway at Lake Central High School in St. John, Ind., his parents said Monday at their attorney's Merrillville, Ind., office.

"He was just punching him" while a group of other students watched, David's mother said of the bully. "Every time (David) tried to get up, he would knock him on his face and back," she said, her voice breaking. He focused on his eyes."

2. K&R

The fight Nov. 8 left David with three hematomas on his head, bruises on both of his eyes and scratches, among other injuries, his parents said. Allen said the teenager is suffering from vision problems and vertigo. (from the article quoted by OP)

This family has been in the US for 30 years. It's maddening that this young man had to endure the bullying in this school.

Was the attacker arrested for assault? If not, why not? Did the school hold an assembly to discuss the attack and to discourage the bullying and to teach tolerance of different cultures? If not, why not? If this wasn't done isn't the school equally guilty since their silence only demonstrates their agreement with the attacker and the year long bullying.

My heart goes out to all the young victims who are living in hell at their schools.
