When does your current star run out?
It's easy to check. Click the Options icon at the top of the DU screen, then click Donor Status in the resulting page. You can look at your expiration date that way, even if you have a donated star.

And, don't forget: If you donate now, even just $5, your star will be good for a year from the donation date. It's all pretty simple, really. If you're coming close to an expiration date, just start a new thread in GD and tell everyone that your star is running out and that you can't afford $5 to pay for one. Someone will be sure to donate you a new star, I'm certain.

Then, you can forget about this whole issue for a year. By then, your situation may well have changed.

2. I'm good for the next 364 days, just re-upped (I was due in Dec anyway)...
Seemed like a no-brainer to me.

6. That's the idea. Get in while the getting's good, and no worries.
I'll probably donate this week, too. My star runs out next August. But, it doesn't matter. When it runs out, I'll just pay the $42.

8. You can do that, too. Maybe someone will kick in for you then.
But, even if they don't, you'll still be able to post, so it's all good.

14. Don't fret. It'll start fusing helium, then, and you'll have a few
million years more...assuming your planet's far enough from the dying star to avoid becoming a crispy critter. Stay optimistic, my friend.

10. Kicking the can down the road for a year doesn't answer the concerns
about policy in general. That is not a solution, just an expedient delay.

Although my star doesn't run out for another 3 months, I'm seriously considering not donating a penny now and letting it expire. I've seen posts today where someone cynically said they gave one cent or one dollar. I don't want to play that kind of game particularly.

So far, with the thousands of posts about this, there has been not one word from the administration addressing any of the issues. If they think that remaining mute while buying people off for a year is the answer, I don't agree.

Your suggestion is like saying, we're going to cut your Medicare benefits and raise your premium soon--but don't worry, pay your premium now and you'll be fine for a year. Not gonna fly with most people.

13. We're all just kicking the can down the road, really.
I mean, who's to say any random one of us will be around when our stars expire? Besides, the very worst that can happen still leaves you able to post and read on DU. If your star runs out and you can't afford to renew, you'll still be a DUer in good standing, able to post as much wisdom as you have in you, as often as you wish. It's a win/win situation, it seems to me.

16. Nice try
Not buying the argument. The policies set here are indicative of the viewpoint towards larger economic and political issues. For those of us who question this policy, it's a matter of principle.

26. 5/20/12. Missed that info source too
My whole donating history is there - which is both quite brief and quite paltry I confess. I should throw something there again just for that reason rather than to avoid scheduled fees for a year.

29. I don't actually know the date. I think Skinner said sometime
by mid-December, but those things sometimes don't go as planned. I've been to the beta site a couple of times, and like the new look and feel. It should be interesting to see it when it's finished. Of course, it will get added to over time, I'm sure. But there will be plenty of room to post there for everyone, whether they can donate or not.

31. I'll donate around the first week of December and then I'm good for a year!
Just like always. Then I'll see if I like DU3 enough to donate again. Again, just like always. I usually split my donations up a bit so that'll be the only difference for me- doing it once a year instead of twice.
