Since SSDI is my sole source of income (as I stated to Skinner) I'm requesting a donation for
myself from another member.

1. There ya go. Someone will no doubt donate a star for you,
and you can forget about it for a year. Put a dollar a week in a jar, and you'll have enough to pay the $42 in a year, plus some extra.

3. This new policy of subscription to view an ad laden site has turned
those who wish to enjoy this into members to have to ask for help. I don't really like that. It changes the feel that we do this because we really want to and not because we have to. Money is the reason democracy has been corrupted. Don't change things just cause DU has a prideful moment and doesn't like having fund drives. It seems worse to institutionalize subscriptions for a site sans most ads.

4. No, the rates are only for ad-free zone
you can still do almost everything for free, but with ads.

8. I'm thinking that there will be a drop in donors but that will result in more eyes on ads and higher
ad rates.

I believe that donations barely make a dent in paying the bills provide income. The best way to increase revenue is to have a captive audience to view ads. The best way to gather a captive audience is to price them out of the ad free market.
