Study: Pedophiles tend to be shorter
Study: Pedophiles Tend to Be Shorter

Pedophilia can be a difficult disease to discuss rationally or explain scientifically, let alone treat, but new research finds that pedophiles tend to be shorter, suggesting the roots of this condition are at least partly biological and may be entirely so.

It was already known that poor development in the womb and just after birth can lead to lower rates of growth, and that shorter people tend to live shorter lives and have a higher risk of heart disease, stroke and nervous system diseases such as schizophrenia.

Now, researchers at the University of Toronto's Centre for Addiction and Mental Health have found a strong statistical link between height and men being attracted to children, which seems to mean something has gone wrong in biological development causing disorder in the brain.

What do you think of this?

1. Anecdotally, I've noticed that Sandusky towers above anyone around him
in every picture, even cops. He's tall and large (not fat) So he's one single example that doesn't support the theory, but just one example

9. Sounds viable
They must be developmentally stunted in every way. They seem to project a lot of their twisted desires on to the kids and yet have no empathy for the lifetime of damage they inflict. Fuckers.

WHO funded this reeking mess? Seriously.

So, the next short, left handed (or ambidextrous) male I meet I should watch when he's around kids?

I'd love to see the list of funders.

15. 2007 Study.. Geeze... as a person living close to Toronto...
I don't think much of this study :(

1,181 patients: Average height pedophiles: 5' 9"; Ave ht Hebefiles 5' 9 3/4 " ; Ave ht 'Normal' 5' 10"..

Toronto is a multi-ethnic city... I really cannot believe that height is a huge factor..

I think their sample is too small.

17. Shorter people live longer in general.
It's one reason women outlive men. Also why Japan has the highest life expectancy.

Growth is very hard on the DNA.

21. Sandusky is huge. It makes no sense to target a group on the basis of one study.
And what is short? Where's the cutoff? What about self-perception, men who are average but are convinced they are short?

27. 5'9??? Isn't a huge percentage of men under 5'9? I'm sure the vast majority
of certain ethnicities are under 5'9. This seems more and more absurd.

31. Was height identified as a possible factor BEFORE the study?
And how many possible factors were included? If you include "enough" factors, some of them will be "significant". It's called the "correlate everything with everything" approach. It's sometimes difficult to pick up in review because the Methods and Results often don't contain accurate and detailed descriptions.

And it's easy to come up with plausible "explanations" once a result is found, whatever the direction of the result.

The heights they used were self-reported. What if pedophiles tend to under-report height while non-offenders over-report?

Colour me dubious on this one.

32. by 0 .8 inches and (2 cm's) the main point is that there probably is a strong biological component
Edited on Mon Nov-14-11 06:09 AM by Douglas Carpenter

Pedophilia is likely a neurodevelopmental disease that people are probably born with.

The biology clues have accumulated: MRIs of pedophiles' brains show they differ in structure from those of non-pedophiles. Pedophiles also more frequently failed grades in school, suffered more head injuries during childhood and are three times more likely to be lefties or ambidextrous (often a sign of early development problems).

36. I think if it wasn't such a serious subject, it'd be a candidate for the IgNobel Awards
It is not a large difference, and seems pretty useless to me. Yes, something has caused a disorder in the brain of pedophiles. This doesn't tell us what, and neither does it tell us it's not maltreatment by parents, which can also affect growth up to adult size (deliberate malnutrition, miserable children who don't eat properly...).
