Religious Right Trying to Pray Away Occupy Wall Street
In case you were wondering if the religious right was going to join the Occupy Movement in solidarity with the poor and disenfranchised as Jesus would have done, think again. Via Right Wing watch, here's the Family Research Council requesting that their members pray for the movement to fizzle:

The expanded Wall Street Occupation is endorsed by labor unions, liberal mayors, governors, the White House, the American Nazi and Communist parties, ACORN, Hollywood enertainers and a long list of supra-liberal and liberal groups, not the least of which is the liberal media.

8. They have been trying to 'pray away' the... for years
In the fall of '71 we were sent to political rallies as an assignment in a Poly Sci class. My very liberal friend and I were sent to a John Birch Society one. I was horrified when I heard them praying, hooting and hollering to God for more conservatives to be born.

12. Unfortunately for them
One pair of hands engaged in work accomplishes much more than 1000 clasped in prayer.

13. Jesus was a rebel.
Is the thing the religious right often forget when they say junk like God is never to be questioned, and rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft.

He protested the injustice of the Pharisees by using unorthodox methods in order to bring about a new religion.

14. You'd think they'd have learned from the 2008 Democratic Convention.
They prayed for rain on the night of candidate Obama's outdoor speech to accept his party's nomination. It turned out to be one of the most beautiful nights they had that summer. With that in mind, I say, "Pray away, assholes!"

21. No wonder their prayers never get answered the way they want them to
They're not praying, they're trying to dictate to God. The last time I checked, the Almighty has the last word.

I guess the teahadists never bothered to read the passage of Scriptures that you cannot serve God and mammon. Either that, or they bow and scrape to the almighty dollar in the name of the Almighty.

19. Well, first you have to completely forget that Jesus was a pacifist and an advocate for the poor
After that it's simply a matter of taking bible quotes out of context and pretending they support the GOP's talking points.

20. It's so strange.
Lots of conservative evangelicals/fundamentalists do sit down and read the bible. There is no mistaking the messages in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. It would take a concentrated act of will to read them as a "believer" and come out in favor of the ruling elites and the pursuit of profit.

24. The bible was used to justify slavery
It's also used to justify Jim Crow laws, homophobia, misogyny, and many other bigotries. I'm sure many of those people read their bible on a regular basis also.

It really has little to do with what the bible says and much more to do with which party allows it's leaders to be controlled by the religious establishment. The left used to be highly controlled by the religious establishment and the bible was perverted for their political goals as well. It's really just a matter of history repeating itself, only this time the political party roles are reversed.

25. All true.
And to be expected - religion is considered to be one of the "four networks of power," at least according to some social scientists. (The other three: military, economic, political.) Endless fodder for my game of "spot the inconsistencies."
