I sit possible to enjoy college football
and be disgusted by the events at Penn State?

I love watching my Longhorns, I attend games and give to the Longhorn Foundation. I have a long history family of University of Texas grads.

If UT was ever involved in such a thing I would be sickened and NOT supportive of the foundation.

Can I still like football?

8. That is sooooo sexist. Here's what my dad taught me, and I
agree. Sports are a waste of time used mostly to create division and empower bullies. It is poison on toast. Good for lugs and the idle rich.

29. Yeah? Sexist, is it?...
Why do you feel it's sexist? Do you feel that we cannot mention tendencies among men, because it is sexist to mention tendencies?

Fact is, more men than women are attracted to sports, just as less men are attracted to chick flicks and ballet, and vice versa. We can go down a whole list of interests that men are more interested or less interested in.

Now focus on this for a moment: I do not mean that 100% of males are attracted to sports. Nothing on this planet is 100% of anything. There are plenty of exceptions. However, exceptions are exceptions.

The reason for the greater male interest (and participation) in sports? Well, perhaps it's evolutionary, and because males can do sports a heck of a lot better than men, just as women can do other things better than men. It certainly is biological:

Men have large amounts of testosterone, where women have tiny amounts (unless they dope up, as has been done by some women for the Olympics and other sports).

Men have larger hearts than women, and this cannot be changed even with testosterone.

Women's hips are large compared with men (which can be tampered with through doping up girls at puberty).

Women have a greater proportion of fat compared with men (and this, too, can be tampered with if girls were doped up at puberty).

The muscle mass of males is far greater than that of women (again, this can be tampered with through doping of the woman).

Women's heights and spines are shorter than men's. Men have a greater volume of blood than women.

Men have a greater bone density than women.

Men have advantages over women in delivery distance in field events. Men have a higher center of gravity which creates an advantage in jumping events. And so on.

Upon reaching puberty, males surpass females in ALL sports activities, except certain specific types of coordination and in flexibility.

Clearly, this tells me that the male body is better suited for sports, it is easier for males to play sports, and it is logical that they would have a greater interest in what they can do well.

This, I believe, is why they are interested in sports and many other activities that require prowess of the nature that men have.

Again, there are exceptions among males and exceptions among females, but they are EXCEPTIONS. A very lean, very well trained woman will be faster in running than a man that is short, fatter, and less fit.

Don't tell me that all of this comes as a surprise to you.

I think you need to focus more and learn to separate what is factual and real, from what is true discrimination. Please cease confusing the two.

putting a lot of time in it.

my sports left me with a lifetime of healthy habits. as a young girl in the 60's and 70's i practiced right along with the boys. competed and was good seeing hard work paid off. gave me confidence and independence. in a time when girls where taught they were inferior, i was being raised equal.

i see the same for my son.

i dont see where the waste of time is.

play the computer? watch tv?

school? both son and i got excellent grades. son does art. played viola.

11. What I'm saying is you can have fun at an amateur competition, and the team that sucks is
the one that would benefit the most from fans who cheer them on. It's easy to root for the winners, harder to stick with a losing team and tell them "Next time--you'll get 'um NEXT time!"

I rooted for the Red Sox for decades before they reversed that curse, ya know. I find Cubs fans inspiring.

I'm always a fan of the Underdog, you see.

I don't like football much, but I'd cheer for the shittiest team if I were conned into attending a game.

Isn't RAH-RAHing at a football competition (or any other sports contest) "fun mindless entertainment?" I always thought so!

You're the one who took what I said, which was a bit of lighthearted commentary, and came back with this slam:

I am allowed as a "progressive" person to root for losers only?

Like I'm some kind of Agenda Enforcer, or something.

My comments had nothing to do with "progressives" or "lib cards" --or politics in any way, shape or form--and everything to do with simply being nice to kids who are stuck playing for shitty teams and who don't often hear anyone cheering them on from the stands with any enthusiasm.

Whatever.

9. It is the most STUPID thing schools allow
I went to a high school where football was a religion. Just like it is at Penn State. The players were "Gods" and could do no wrong.

Not a one of the players in my high school made it to the big leagues. They didn't become lawyers or accountants or teachers either. They didn't start and run their own businesses. I think I can still find a couple of them begging downtown and fighting for the heat vents during the winter.

Yep, sports really taught them valuable skills they can use in the real world.

Our priorities sure are in order aren't they?

27. Depends. Do you live in the 2-dimensional world or the 3-dimensional one?
I wish I were joking but I swear some people live in a 2-D world in which there is only black/white, up/down, on/off, good/bad, us/them and my side/their side.

I think there are more shades of grey, more subtleties than good/bad, more to human interactions than legal/illegal, in the 3-D world. Of course, I could be wrong and there are even more dimensions. :)

Of course, I also miss nuance, so maybe I'm just extremely weird.

nothing to do with the game of football other than the people involved happened to be football coaches. Individuals were involved in the alleged molestation and cover up. I have to say, the ridiculous "Football is the root of all that is evil in this world" actually made me watch more college football than I normally would on any given Saturday.

I am a Liberal. And I watch football, and I enjoy it. And that makes me no less liberal than the "I never watch television, sports are stupid, smokers suck, SUV drivers should be hung etc." bullshitters that like to hang around these parts and bleat like no tomorrow. And I am level-headed enough to realize that the problem wasn't football...the problem was a pedophile coach, with friends who couldn't or wouldn't see how evil he was---which,in turn, makes them evil...not football. And I can't wait for Monday Night.

52. Well, let's hope UT is never involved in such a thing so you don't feel like me.
Penn State is my alma mater and I'm a huge football fan; have enthusiastically supported the team and have always been proud of my school and the football program. So when the news broke....can't even put into words the emotional rollercoaster I've been on all week, it's not black and white. Even though I'm completely disgusted by what's been revealed and am bracing for it to get worse - I still love college football, and I still love my team. For you to say you wouldn't be supportive if in the same situation is probably unrealistic, as I've found out.

I watched the game yesterday. During the opening, I sobbed for the victims and grieved for what will never be the same. Once the game started, I cheered for the players who have had NOTHING to do with this tragedy and deserve to play out the season. I feel so sad for them, especially the seniors. They are victims as well. There are so very many victims in all of this and those who are responsible must be held accountable no matter who they are.

53. I enjoy college football,
I enjoyed watching my MU Tigers pound the Longhorns yesterday. But I'm still disgusted by what has happened at Penn State. What happened there is not, though many would wish otherwise, a condemnation of the entire sport of football, but rather just what happened at PSU.

54. It shouldn't be a condemnation of PSU football either.
The young men on the team - they didn't do anything wrong, and deserve the opportunity to continue to play with new leadership.

During the opening of the game, I sobbed for the victims and the loss...things will never be the same at my alma mater. Once the game started, I cheered for the team and for those players who will graduate and never return. It's difficult to put into words. :(

55. Of course. Using this to somehow discredit the sport of football
is trivializing the issue. Then we may as well stop education, as many molestations have occurred in schools.
