4. I'd give him an F
for the simple fact that on the day that a category 3 hurricane-force storm hit northwest Alaska, he okayed offshore drilling in the Chukchi Sea. This is just insanity. Everyone readily admits that there is no capability for a spill response, that the nearest Coast Guard station is over 1,000 miles away (Kodiak is closer to Seattle than it is to the Arctic), and that clean-up or even detection of a spill under ice is dicey at best.

Sheer insanity, and I would have hoped for better from him (and from both our Democratic senator Mark Begich and Republican Lisa Murkowski who are all happy about this).

10. Let's take a look at these:
1. This is a planning decision.

2. This regulates SOx and NOx starting in 2014.

3. This removes mining claims for 20 years.

4. This begins in 2014.

5. This was a court decision and had nothing to do with the Obama administration.

6. This is the same as number 4.

So really we're looking at 4 things, 2 of which start in 2014 and one of which lasts for 20 years and then it's gone. The last one sounds more like a bureaucratic move than an actual move to protect the environment.

14. Actually,

...it doesn't matter. In the end, on every measure from clean air to conservation, President Obama's record is going to be unmatched by most Presidents. His record, not the cherry-picked record or opinions, but his actual record will speak for itself.

20. A glib dismissal: "It doesn't matter."
Edited on Fri Nov-11-11 01:57 AM by Kaleko
And, "...his actual record will speak for itself."

Yes, it has already spoken for itself. So loudly that his actual track record lost him his grassroots base.

Nothing could have unmasked the collusion of both parties in primarily serving their wealthy paymasters more effectively than Obama's presidential record so far. It's perfect. This marvelous orator's fall from grace proved to be the great ass-kicker, exactly what was needed to mobilize the 99%.

No personality-cult member can make people un-see what they have recognized. The persuasion game is over. Obama lost.

6. He gets an 'Epic Fail'....why? Three words 'Gulf.Oil.Spill'....
And don't get me started on his administrations' wolf policy, Arctic and deep-sea drilling policies...

A total failure...

7. Yes, this is where he irrevocable lost my support
I suppose the loss of my support was an accumulation of things building up to the manner in which he failed us in the Gulf oil disaster, but this is where I said "no more". Then the cherry on the cake was him taking his daughter for a swim in the Gulf for a photo-op to show just how safe the Gulf was. OMG.

13. F - he has been horrible on the environment overall
Edited on Thu Nov-10-11 07:47 PM by quinnox
From the disgraceful cover up of the Gulf oil spill, of the real and epic damage that was taking place (that several Obama supporters went along with I may add), to the latest cowardly decision to not say whether he will approve a new pipeline until after he is elected because of fear of further pissing off the environmentalists (you just know he will approve it though if he gets re-elected), the Obama admin has been no friend to the environment.

Oh, I forgot, they also recently cleared BP to start drilling again in the Gulf, apparently all is forgiven.

19. Rhetorically, a C or D, but actually a C or B
i assume we're comparing against other presidents and not perfection.

the rhetoric in favor of expanded oil drilling, the too trusting attitude towards BP, the co-oping of Republican phrasing on environmental protection...that is really bad.

the actual policies though are far better and the early push for cap and trade and green energy has to be factored into his grade, and it started out excellent.

he's still at B-C. he talks, well, i get afraid when he talks. hopefully he pivots on the environment in the direction he's pivoted on the economy.

we'll see.

22. I'd love to see some "why". I agree he hasn't been great on the environment but
when I try to pinpoint how and why he hasn't been great, I keep running into articles like this:

http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/the_green_lantern/2011/07/obamas_environmental_report_card.html

which explains it's not as negative as some of us think and points out some specifics.
