My Sister had cancer.

I did not want to write this until she had her 6 month check-up with her Dr. He says she is cancer free and the plastic surgeon did a great job on her nose. Thanks to the wonderful people, here on DU, we were able to raise the "up-front money" to get the cancer removed and her face restored. Thank all of you. The prayers, well wishes and the contributions were IMO, the reason she is well and still beautiful.

After the surgery, she applied for forgiveness of her remaining medical costs and she got it! It is a tragedy that in America of 2011, people have to beg in order to survive. universal health care is a right (promoting the general welfare) that all Americans should be guaranteed. Even though I have medical insurance, I have been putting off medical bankruptcy.

While the wealthy of America are obscenely so, the average American cannot afford to live if they have health problems. I know (or read) that many of the wealthiest Americans agree that they should pay more taxes to help the 99%, the corporatism that has taken over our country is all about greed. That is why we must protect and support OWS. We need our country back.

Nope, I won't rant. I just want to thank and bless every DU'er that helped Debbie in so many ways. She is a great person and we need all of those that we can get. Honestly, I never dreamed that my fellow malcontents would be so generous. You taught me a lesson and I try to help people now more than ever.

What a wonderful story as well. One of my cancers was a facial melanoma and I had no insurance at the time. I was lucky enough to meet one of the finest and most generous doctors on the East Coast. He preformed twelve surgeries and didn't charge me a penny. I only had to pay for the biopsies and the Anesthesiologist. He saved my eye, my face and (I believe) my life.

I often think that my doctor was one of a kind and what would have happened if he hadn't been there to help. It's something that working Americans face everyday. Thank goodness that your family found a way with the help of DU.

10. Personally, I have had a Dr. refuse to charge me for

saving my life too. I do have insurance but limited resources. The relatively small sum paid by my insurance was all he would accept.

It has been my privilege to know a couple of Dr.'s that had more interest in my health than my money. My G.P. in Indiana knew that I was possibly losing my insurance. He told me not to worry, he would still take care of me. He donated about half of his time to help those that couldn't afford it.

Unfortunately, since medicine is a lucrative career these days, some professionals view it as a job. Some view it as a calling. Not so coincidentally, the Dr.'s i was talking about, supported universal health care.

Where I now live there is a health department that is free of charge for those that can't afford medical care. They are very limited in their ability to treat their patients. If the patients need surgery, sorry. If they need pain medication, sorry. They are allowed to provide their patients with drugs for most health problems, but not allowed to treat their pain even the people who have an urgent need for orthopedic surgery (i.e. torn rotator cuff) I do not understand the reasoning behind this.

Are the people with insurance worthy of pain relief but not the uninsured?

11. Believe me, I know all about it...

My Endo says that treating me is like doctoring in Somalia because BCBS has a very low and strict limit on testing. I think he secretly enjoys diagnosing me with bits and pieces of information. He likes the challenge!

I have my own business and insure myself. Here in NJ that means over $600 a month for the most basic health insurance without prescription coverage, with large deductibles and sever limits on blood tests, x-rays etc. I have to depend on the generosity of Doctors. Imagine what it's like for people with kids. It must be a nightmare!
