Grand jury report on alleged Penn State sex abuse
"Former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky was arrested Saturday on charges that he preyed on boys he met through The Second Mile, a charity he founded for at-risk youths. Two high-ranking Penn State administrators face arraignment Monday on charges they lied about knowledge of the crimes to a grand jury. Here is the grand jury’s report."

3. I hadn't been paying much attention because sports, and crimes by sports
figures, just don't interest or surprise me much.

Sandusky needs to go to prison for a very long time. Those who covered up for him need to see the inside of a cell for a while, too.

4. Good ol' boy network
Best protection available for anything. It sounds like they couldn't conceive of such a thing ever getting out into the public so they covered it up and pretended they never knew specifics. The janitors and the Grad Student who were witnesses probably didn't think they should ever go to the police themselves, since they were so low on the ladder in this network. What an alternate reality.....

5. Makes you wonder, doesn't it?

How many other stories are buried by the dynamics in play in this particular scenario. How many that contemplated blowing the whistle were either warned off or thought they themselves would not survive snitching on the powerful ones. We know that power corrupts and that absolute power corrupts absolutely. Paterno and Sandusky were lords of the realm, untouchable. This proves that.

It was an outsider, a coach from another town, one of whose kids blew the whistle to him about yet another Sandusky incident, that finally went to the cops and the Grand Jury was started. Otherwise, this would still be covered up.

We all have to remember this is in a major university, isolated in a small, insular community in Western Pennsylvania. Anyone been in western Pennsylvania? It's like the capital of Appalachia.

6. It does make you think
I think that denial and authority are powerful things.

I live in Lexington, KY, and as big of a UK fan as I am, I see how powerful the university basketball program is here so I can understand how the people of College Station see Penn State football.

People have to learn how to break out of the authority driven mold in thinking. It is hard.

And VERY unfortunately for Paterno, it makes sense of he behavior of him and his superiors: They knew a LOT about about Sandusky than he's telling.
