If you're poor and not well educated, you're going to be competing against thousands for that handful of jobs at McDonalds.

If you're over 50, you may be qualified for the position, but the odds of your actually getting it drop dramatically.

If you're under 30 with a college degree but in need of on-the-job training to fill a particular slot, you're up against the 35 year old applicant who has been doing exactly that work for the last ten years and is willing to accept an entry level salary for lack of anything better.

In a more normal job market, you might be out of work for a few months, apply to a couple of dozen, and finally land one that's a good match for your skills. In today's market, you can spend a year filing hundreds of applications and never get within shouting distance of an actual job.
