It occurs to me that every deployment by the Department of Defense signals a failure of the Department of State. It begs the question, considering our sprawling military complex, of why we don't send our troops home from every outpost and replace them with ambassadors? Wouldn't it be a more peaceful world if we sent out men and women of peace rather than self-identified "warriors"?

The smartest thing this nation ever did was form the Peace Corps, the dumbest was allowing a standing army. I once heard a comic jest that the United States was just a great big insurance company with an Army. He may have been right back then but now its hard to say we're even much of an insurance company.
