3. This is Gaddafi's buddy.
It is impossible for NATO to help.

Apparently there are large scale defections from the Syrian military.

Having a military may save Syria, because defected military know how to fight.

4. We can thank...
China and Russia for making international intervention fruitless.

Hopefully more of the military will defect; otherwise we could start seeing major spillover into Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq, and Jordan.

10. And it's only going to get worse...
The West needs to stand up to China - otherwise this sort of geopolitical influence will only expand.

6. Bashar Al-Assad is hedging his bets that he'll kill the protesters into submission.
Unlike Libya, there is no western appetite for military intervention in Syria, precisely because the country is too closely aligned with both Russia and to a lesser extent China and also Iran, and two of those hold permanent veto power on the Security Council. Libya never had such extensive relationships with either China or Russia.

In Libya and Egypt, whole military units began defecting to the other side to support the protesters. In Syria, I hear of stories of individuals defecting over, but I haven't heard any widespread reports of whole units defecting en masse like in the other two examples.

Until his military apparatus begins rebelling against his orders to kill civilians in a major way, he'll continue to kill until the protesters give up out of sheer casualties.

9. I have read on AJE blog about whole units defecting in Syria
far more than in Libya.

In LIbya there was no army to speak of - only Gaddafi son's brigades to protect the Gaddafis.

12. Yeah, but they need heavy weapons.
What soldiers in Syria are doing is simply deserting their posts. In Libya, local units defected en masse, often taking with them heavy weapons like artillery, trucks, and even some of the tanks. This typically happened in areas that were already anti-Gaddhafi. This is why Benghazi quickly fell out of the control of Gaddhafi and was the first major city to do so. The loyalists in the city were quickly outgunned and outmanned against rebels opposed to Gaddhafi.

While I hear of major fire fights between rebel soldiers and loyalists inside Syria, the loyalists invariably outgun rebels, simply because they keep bringing in more tanks and artillery.

8. Aljazeera: Arab League warns of Syria peace deal failure
Reports from Syria indicate that seven people have died in fresh clashes as the chief of the Arab League warned that failure of a peace deal agreed to this week would have devastating impact.

"The failure of the Arab solution would lead to catastrophic results for the situation in Syria and the region as a whole," Syria had said on Wednesday it would abide by the Arab League plan to end seven months of violence triggered by protests against President Bashar al-Assad.

Al Jazeera's Rula Amin, reporting from Bierut, said there has yet to be any sign of the government's intention to honor the peace plan. "On the face of it, not much has changed," she said.Nabil Elaraby, the League's secretary-general, said in a statement on Saturday.

In his statement, Arab League's Elaraby expressed "serious worry over the continuing violence" in Syria and "appealed to the Syrian government over the need to take immediate steps to protect civilians" and to set the country on the course of dialogue. ... The Arab plan, which Damascus said it backed, called for a complete halt to violence, the release of prisoners, removing the military presence from cities and residential areas, and allowing the Arab League and media access to report on the situation.

Assad must know that alienating the Arab League, which has taken a very long time to accomplish, is a dangerous strategy unless he thinks he can crush the protests in very short order. That doesn't seem likely given the tenacity of the protesters in Syria in the face of much violence.

11. BBC: Syrian opposition urges Homs international protection
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-15624414

The Syrian National Council said government forces had been shelling residential areas for days. It says civilians are very short of food and medical supplies, and electricity and water have been cut.

Last week the Syrian government agreed to an Arab League deal to pull troops out of residential areas. However, the BBC's Jonathan Head, in neighbouring Turkey, says this has not happened.

The Syrian National Council statement urged the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Co-operation and the Arab League to act to stop what it called the "massacre" in Homs. It called on the international community to send "Arab and international observers, instantly, to the city of Homs to oversee the situation on the ground".

The opposition is calling for Homs to be declared a "humanitarian disaster area", so that civilians can be given international protection, including evacuation from areas that are being shelled. The statement also urges the UN and Arab League to call for an immediate ceasefire.

The Arab League is due to hold a meeting on Saturday to address the Syrian government's apparent failure to comply with a peace deal it accepted last week.
