Did you ever notice...?
that people often die soon after retiring? I am starting this thread as a tribute to Mr. Rooney - not as ridicule. Please share your best 'did you ever notice' comments.

1. My friend's father had a massive stroke an hour after his retirement party,
and died the next day.

5. Sorry to hear that
I've decided to retire and take SS and my retirement pension as soon as I'm eligible. I may not live as well as if I'd continued to work full-time, but there are no sure things in life, so I'll try and squeeze some measure of enjoyment out of it.

6. The way things are going.
It is best to get the pension while it is still there.

7. The company where I worked for 18 years
tried to weasel their way out of paying pensions a few years back, but the government ordered them to keep the pension plan intact. I probably won't be so fortunate by the time I am eligible. By that time, the federal itself may plead poverty as an excuse to stop taking over pension plans.

2. There was a study of IBM forced early retirees, that showed that
early retirement was not conducive to long life.

Perhaps Andy Rooney retired too early.

8. Rooney was 92 years old.....
Hard to see how the word 'early' fits in there...

9. Did they look only at those forced to retire?
The key word there is 'forced'. Showing that forced retirement is unhealthy says nothing about chosen retirement at all....

12. "Did you ever notice how college students smell like beer? I wonder why that is."

OK. Not a real Andy Rooney comment, but when he visited the school I was attending (back in '90) another student made the first comment and I followed up with the second. The instructor wasn't real happy but the rest of the students enjoyed it.

13. It probably wasn't a coincidence that he retired.
Many of us would pretty-gladly keep working at what
we do essentially forever (which is to say, until
we died).

Mr. Tesha is probably like that; aside from an urge
to have more free time for house maintenance and
travel, I'm pretty sure he'd gladly keep going to
his job as long as they'll let him get away with it.

Andy Rooney was probably like this as well, quitting
only when it was clear that it was just a matter of
days/weeks before he reached his ultimate "quitting
time".
