Man uses murdered daughter's cell phone to taunt victim's mother.

I've been following this case because it happened in my old stompin' grounds. The victim attended my alma mater high school. A school where I have friends who teach.

If the allegations are true, the killer used the girl's cell phone to taunt the mother. A phone which was in his possession when apprehended, according to police.

Man held without bond in death of Indian Head Park teen

38-year-old parolee with a long criminal history was denied bail Friday, charged with murdering an Indian Head Park teen last week.
John L. Wilson of Chicago was charged with first-degree murder and residential burglary in the stabbing death of 14-year-old Kelli O’Laughlin.

Assistant State’s Attorney Peter Troy said he stole Kelli’s cell phone and iPod touch, later using the phone to send taunting texts to her mother. Police found the phone on Wilson when he was arrested, Troy said.

At a press conference in Indian Head Park Friday, neither Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez nor Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart would reveal details of the taunts.

“A horrific crime was committed here, and then to have the mother of the victim subject to taunts by the person who did it ... I can’t describe it,” Dart said.

1. My turn to say this...
I don't support the death penalty, but in this case... it's very tempting.

2. I think I could throw the switch on him personally,
and, like you, I do not believe in capital punishment.

4. I often feel that way about individual cases.
And that is precisely why we need to eliminate the death penalty -- not so much for the cases of its use that we oppose as for those that we are tempted to support.

5. Child murder and sex crimes are so disgusting
that they frequently make me question my opposition to capital punishment. Though I still do not think the state should kill people, there are times that it just does not upset me. This will probably be one of those times. Killing a girl is some kind of evil, but then taunting the mom. Its beyond my comprehension of evil.

6. Exactly.
Taking that extra step to taunt a victim's loved ones... that eliminates one major reason I'm against it right there... that you have to be sure, absolutely 100% sure, of guilt.

The cruelty of it adds another reason to change my stance.

This damaged excuse for a person should never see the light of day again.

8. No death penalty, I'd rather have Dexter pay him a visit.

With the death penalty there's a huge trial and corporate execution - Dexter, once he gets proof - makes him disappear no trial, no fuss.

3. I hope the cell-phone texting was part of the story of how he was tracked down.
Full justice would demand that his taunts effectively turned on him.

11. Not an overly bright criminal, is he??
although I am interested in knowing the full details about this tidbit:

"Prosecutors said the U.S. Secret Service was able to use cell-phone tracking technology to determine that Kelli’s phone and Wilson’s phone were traveling together throughout Chicago."

12. I suppose the locals often tap Fed resources in these bigger cases.
I wonder if the SS has a larger presence in the south side due to the President's residence (pure un-informed speculation).
