Rochester Police Department: "anything not physically on your person is abandoned property"
Edited on Thu Nov-03-11 11:45 AM by Earth_First
This is getting entirely too ridiculous here in Rochester.

Now I'm being told, (haven't been there since early thing morning bailing/assisting the legal team) that essentially ANYTHING that is not physically on your person in Washington Square Park is subject to being 'abandoned property' and is subject for immediate removal by City Sanitation crews...

Including but not limited to, backpacks, foodstuffs, signs, etc.

The City of Rochester is trying extremely hard to shut this down, folks...

Last night we had another round of arrests, 17 were forcibly removed and arrested after occupying the park after 'curfew'

Thanks to OccupyBufalo,Erie,Syracuse and Ithaca for coming out to support us last night!!!

1. So if I go to Rochester, I have to keep my car in my pocket or it is abandoned?
Well, I guess that does solve any parking problem there. ;-)

6. Clearly not, but you've come up with a solution of sorts.
Someone with a truck or van can park it nearby, and people can stash their stuff in it prior to a march or rally or what-have-you.

7. ...and this is what we have been doing.
Unfortunately it's a bit of a logisitcal nightmare, trying to get whom who has what back here when. It's fu*ked.

But when they start posting 'no parking' signs to the meters, this tactic is essentially lost...

9. Contractor trash bags. Make everyone put their stuff in one, tie it off, and label it.
That way you have no fights over who gets what (it works for large families going on a beach holiday--from experience I tell you this--so why not any other diverse group?).

How far is the "no parking" net? Might be time to purchase a few inexpensive hand trucks (HOME DEPOT or other big box store, around twenty five to forty bucks, depending on size--they even have flat ones that might be useful, too) and set up a watchbill to fetch and carry. It's either that, or maybe move to ....the Police Station Parking Lot? (only kidding, but not totally...).

Where are the nearest legislators' offices? That might be a good base of operations.

4. So, when the cops come out of their cop car . . .
It's "abandoned" too? Or is the sauce only for the goose and not the gander?

5. You read my mind.
I was just going to help myself to a UHF radio and an AR-15.

8. The vehicle is registered/licensed, they will tell you, which assigns ownership.
I do think, though, that if they are insistent about this, people could use cars to store stuff when they're going to be away from their goods and have left no one behind to watch over the things.

12. Bicycles? Dogs? Picnic baskets? Beach blankets? Frisbees? Other sports gear?
It should be pretty easy to document the fact that the police enforce this law/ordnance/made-up rule differently for different groups.

14. So, when the "owners" of those big shiny buildings have gone home for the day,
those buildings are "abandoned"?..or when they leave their limos, it's been abandoned..free for the taking?

16. If I picnic in Rochester parks the cops will take my blanket & food if I don't carry them while
I eat?

Really ridiculous. Hope you keep resisting. Hope resistance brings out more support.

17. Kudos to you and Occupy Rochester for
creating a presence that is clearly getting some attention. Sad to hear that the locals are making it so ridiculously hard to navigate.
