Visited Lincoln's Tomb today
Coming back home from visiting family in St. Louis I stopped in Springfield and paid a visit to Abraham Lincoln's Tomb.

Would he even recognize the party he helped found anymore? Modern Republicans might look at him as their hero, but if he came back they'd probably teabag him right out of the Republican party.

1. Have you seen the History Channel show about stealing Lincoln's body?
It's sort of tied up with the building of that elaborate tomb. It's an interesting story and would make an exciting film. I found it fascinating.

Those are some wonderful photos of a very ignored part of our heritage!

Thanks for posting them.

4. I didn't see the show
But I've certainly heard about the attempt to take his body and how Lincoln's son Robert took a page from the Pullman family in having the tomb rebuilt so Lincoln's body couldn't be stolen.

7. Watch out for the next time they re-run it, it is a good story.
I think they talked about the changes in the tomb to protect the body. I didn't remember/realize it was from the Pullman family.

9. Robert was general counsel for the Pullman company
He was named President of the company after Pullman's death and when the tomb needed to be completely rebuilt he decided that they should take a page from the Pullman family book on securing the remains of people.

2. I've been there
about 10 years ago. Very moving, the guards ask for silence at the tomb.

5. I would have brought a generator
When I got there I'd have hooked the generator to the top of Lincoln's head. I would tell him tales of his Republican party. The power generated by his spinning would power IL and parts of Eastern MO for years.

6. I will not be surprised if when my turn comes...
...and I ask to see Lincoln when I arrive upstairs if St. Peter has an angel take me to see "Whirling Abe!"

And the reverse is true as well.

12. Good Pics!
It's been a long time since I was there. The Lincoln Library in Springfield is pretty nice to visit as well.
